New Year Resolutions

B
y Councilmember Jeff Weninger

At the beginning of the new year, many of us will make resolutions to improve our lives -- whether it be financially, physically or emotionally. For some, it may be the time to fulfill a life long dream of changing careers or starting a new business.

Making such significant decisions can be very exciting, although there are challenges that should be carefully considered in order to achieve success. More than 10 years ago, I reflected on similar decisions. I finally chose to take destiny into my own hands by opening Floridinos and Dilly’s Deli with my business partner, Shaun Kelly.

As a restaurant owner, I can attest that success is very gratifying, but it doesn’t come without hard work and sacrifice. In the early years of operation, it wasn’t unusual to spend close to 90 hours per week at work and assist with every aspect of the business, including mopping the floors and busing tables. Ultimately, there is no greater satisfaction than to be one’s own boss and being able to contribute back to the community.

In my personal experience, it was my business partner’s father, Gilbert Kelly, who acted as a mentor and provided financial support when we started our enterprise. There is no doubt I was very fortunate to be in this position. The key was to be prepared for luck when it happened and not to be afraid to seek counsel from successful business owners in order to emulate their achievements. Today, it is not uncommon for my business partner and I to sit down with new entrepreneurs to do the same.

For those considering starting a new business, there are many local resources available. The City’s Economic Development Division is a good place to start. Staff provides guidance to individuals who are contemplating relocating, expanding or starting a business in Chandler. The department publishes a Small Business Guide that is easily accessible on the City Web site at www.chandleraz.gov. This useful publication highlights information needed to prepare a business plan, find sources of capital, select a location and understand the roles of various City departments as well as federal and state agencies in the regulatory process. The Economic Development Web page also provides links to business assistance programs and community data. In addition, the City and the Chandler Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the Chandler Small Business Development Workshop each year to assist small and minority businesses. For further information, you can reach City staff by calling 480-782-3030.

The Chandler Chamber of Commerce is the principal advocate for the business community and the catalyst that connects Chandler businesses to citizens and the government. It offers valuable information to small business owners in association with the Services Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), an entity that provides free and confidential advice for entrepreneurs. Counseling sessions can be arranged by contacting the Chamber at 480-963-4571. In addition, member businesses benefit from a wide array of marketing and networking opportunities. Free counseling sessions and educational workshops are also available through the Maricopa Community College Small Business Development Center. Information is accessible online at www.maricopasbdc.com or by calling 480-784-0590.

Finally, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), an independent agency of the federal government, provides aid to qualifying businesses. In fiscal year 2007-08, SBA contributed a total of $1.2 billion in loans for Arizona small businesses. In Chandler alone, SBA provided more than $91 million in financial assistance to 92 small business owners. Loans to start-up businesses in Chandler reached close to $19 million and created 624 jobs. The SBA local branch can be contacted by phone at 602-745-7200 or online at www.sba.gov/localresources/district/az.

With the new year already upon us is it time you decided to fulfill your dreams? If you plan on starting a new business, be sure to proceed with caution, understand all the work involved and utilize the many resources at your disposal. Following your passion and trying new ventures that are beneficial to you and the community is indeed admirable. Whatever your dreams may be, I wish you much success and happiness in 2008.
