Overstreet Chandler to add great energy to downtown core

By Mayor Jay Tibshraeny

In late March, Overstreet Chandler officially broke ground at the corner of Chandler Boulevard and Arizona Avenue. This project will be a game changer for our downtown, with a new level of energy and additional entertainment options for residents.

Overstreet Chandler will include 77,000 square feet of new restaurants -- and the Flix Brewhouse complex -- making it one of the hottest destinations in the East Valley, if not the state. This will be the first Flix Brewhouse in Arizona and one of just six in the country. The chain brews its specialized craft beers on site for patrons to enjoy during a show or in the lobby bar.

The project furthers a decades-long shared vision that I have had for this area. It’s been a long time coming, and I think the foresight that the developer, LGE, had for this site will be worth the wait. What we have always wanted to achieve in the downtown is a well-balanced place that embraces many uses -- from multi-family, office, entertainment and retail, to arts and culture. A true urban environment that is energized 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Having grown up in Chandler, I have seen this area undergo many changes. Some good, some not. We’ve overcome many challenges through the years and are now in a period of remarkable rebirth. It’s very exciting to me to see the transformation. Through the combined efforts of the City, and the private development community, we are on a pretty good roll right now. In fact, this project alone is estimated to bring an economic impact of $51 million to the City of Chandler.  I want to again thank our partners at LGE – and all of the groups that are working with us on this project. We appreciate their investment in downtown and for sharing our vision.

Just to the west of this project is the Alta San Marcos multi-family project that will soon be under construction.  And, finally, we also are excited about the Site 6 project across from City Hall that the City Council unanimously approved late last year. The 169,000-square-foot development will include a multi-building office and commercial mix – as well as additional parking. Ryan Companies is the developer, and like LGE, have a proven track record in the Valley.

All of this development will present some challenges for those coming to downtown in the coming months. But remember, there is plenty of parking on the east side of Arizona Avenue with three parking garages for your use at no charge.

I encourage you to continue to shop and dine in our downtown. With so many unique shops, galleries, restaurants and bars, there is a little something for everyone. And, don’t forget the Farmers Market each Thursday from 4-7 p.m., and the monthly Art Walks. Both are sponsored by our partners at the Downtown Chandler Community Partnership.
