City of Chandler Human Resources

We will only have ONE date for water skills testing for the Temp Lifeguard I and Temp Lifeguard II positions. This testing will take place on Saturday, March 25, 2017. In order to be scheduled to test on this date, you MUST apply with Human Resources using the link above.


The City of Chandler certification courses in Lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor will open for resident registration on Saturday, November 5. Non resident registration will take place on Saturday, November 12.

Temporary Part-Time Jobs
The City of Chandler soon will be seeking
reliable, dedicated, hard working individuals to become part of our aquatics team. We will be looking for ;part-time employees, ages 15
and older to contribute to our award-winning program.

These positions are temporary part-time, however, incumbents must be available to work January through December due to year-round aquatic programs. During “peak” season (May thru July), employees& have the opportunity to work 40 hours per week. In the “off-peak” season (August – April) hours may vary from 5-20 hours per week.

All candidates offered employment with the City of Chandler are expected to work during the school year.

Certification requirements and courses
Certification Courses

Acceptance of a student's registration form for the certification classes does not necessarily mean participation in the class. Students must successfully pass all required written or water skills test to take part in class.

Certification will be determined after students have successfully completed all required water skills and written exams. Failure to pass final skills tests and written exams does not allow for refunds.

Resident registration begins on November 5 and non resident registration begins November 12 at 10 a.m.

Mail-in or Drop-off registration forms are currently being accepted and will be processed randomly starting at 10 a.m. on November 5 for residents and 10 a.m. on November 12 for non residents.

Lifeguarding
- American Red Cross


Teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course ;content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries.

Upon successful completion, participant will receive a certificate for Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED valid for 2 years.

Prerequisites:
• Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.
• Tread water for two (2) minutes, legs only
• Complete a timed event within one (1) minute, 40 seconds. (Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps).

* Must be 15 years of age by the last day of the class.

Participants are responsible for acquiring their own American Red Cross text books and pocket mask prior to the first day of the class.

Water Safety Instructor

The purpose of this course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress.

Prerequisites:
• Demonstrate the ability to perform 25 yards of front crawl (freestyle), back crawl (backstroke), breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and butterfly (15 yards);
• Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (float or sculling)
• Tread water for 1 minute

* Must be 16 years of age by the last day of the class.

Participants are responsible for acquiring their own American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Manual & Water Safety Instructor Manual prior to the first day of class.

CERTIFICATION CLASS REFUND / CANCELLATION/TRANSFER POLICY:
--Advanced cancellations: 8 days or more prior to the start date of the class will be charged a 50% cancellation fee.

--Cancellations 7 days or less - no refund will be issued. All transfers must be made 5 days prior to the start of the class.


Aquatic Training Programs for Youths
Swim Team Prep Academy
Ages 5½ to 18

The focus of this program is to target nee and previously enrolled recreation swim team participants to ensure readiness for the recreation swim team and review strokes with our returning swimmers. We are looking to help individuals develop the skills necessary to be a part of the recreation swim teams, enhance stroke techniques and stroke mechanics.

Emphasis is placed on proper body position on the front and back stroke, streamline body position, develop a strong Flutter, breaststroke and dolphin kick. This class is fast paced, fun and the participants will begin building strength and stamina while learning. Our goals are to improve on existing swimming skills and increase
endurance.

Pre-requisite: 
Registration is open to individuals, ages 5½ to 18 years and must have completed the American Red Cross swimming ability equivalent to our Fish class. Participants must be able to perform the
freestyle and backstroke with some proficiency.
    • Participants ages 5½-8, MUST be able to swim continuously for 25-yards of freestyle with rotary breathing
   • Participants ages 9-18, MUST be able to swim continuously for 50-yards of freestyle with rotary breathing.

Junior Lifeguard Program
Ages 11 to 15  

This course will teach water safety and introduce participants to the duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard;however, this course will not certify anyone to be a lifeguard. Participants will have an introduction to first aid, and CPR/AED and build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills in preparation for the American Red Cross Lifeguard course. Successful completion requires participation in skills practice. Enrollment is limited to 15 participants.

To participate in Junior Lifeguarding,the following skills must be demonstrated:

• Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
• Tread water for one minute.
• Float on the back for 30 seconds.
• Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater.

The skills evaluation will occur on the first day of the program. Participants should bring a swimsuit and towel for the skills evaluation and for every class. Upon completion of this program, the participant will receive a certificate of completion and t-shirt. Upon turning 15 years of age, they will be prepared to enroll in the American Red Cross Lifeguard course, where the knowledge and skills of a lifeguard will be taught.

Would you like to start a career as a Lifeguard and need help developing your swimming skills and endurance to pass the lifeguard course prerequisites? Then, this is the class for YOU! In this course each participant will be evaluated and provided instruction on stroke techniques and endurance training specific to passing the entry requirements for the Lifeguard courses. We will introduce rescue techniques and CPR/AED.
