Job Description
ARTS CENTER MANAGER            

Pay Grade: 29                    FLSA Status: Exempt    
Job Group: Managerial (M)            Class Code: A016

Classification Summary:
The primary function of an employee in this class is to manage and operate all financial, administrative, and programming activities for the Chandler Center for the Arts. Work is reviewed for the effective functioning of the department and effective development of the comprehensive plan. The principal duties of the position are performed in a general office environment.

Essential Functions:
Essential Functions are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills. They are intended to be accurate summaries of what the job classification involves and what is required to perform it. Employees are responsible for all other duties as assigned.
Plans, organizes, manages, and supervises all activities of the Chandler Center for the Arts;
Supervises fulltime and part-time staff, and resolves any issues that require guidance;
Evaluates work of subordinates and writes performance appraisals;
Guides programming efforts and usage of the facility;
Monitors budgets and financial activity, including City appropriations and Chandler Cultural Foundations budget;
Develops and monitors overall marketing and public relations strategies;
Monitors both industry trends and community needs through surveys and other correspondence;
Serves as liaison with for-profit and non-profit community arts organizations that use the facility;
Serves as Center liaison between the City and the Chandler School District;
Serves as primary liaison to the Chandler Cultural Foundation;
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures;
Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Theatre administration and operations;
Business management principles, such as accounting, finance, marketing, and artist contract negotiations;
Various art disciplines, including drama, dance, music, and popular entertainment;
Ticketing, fiscal controls, and patron service operations;
Marketing strategies for the arts and public relations;
Non-profit organizational management and accountability requirements;
Management and supervisory principles and practices;
Operation of standard office equipment and a personal computer with job-related software.

Ability to:
Plan, organize, and direct the work of a large staff and to analyze problems and recommend solutions;
Make decisions on matters of policy interpretations and complex technical and administrative problems;
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with board members, the City Council, the school board, user groups and the public;
Use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
Supervise, monitor, and evaluate the work of others;
Operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties.

Supervision Received:
The Arts Center Manager reports to the Community Services Director.

Supervision Exercised:
Supervision is exercised over a staff of fulltime, part-time, skilled and student workers, and volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Arts Administration, or a related field; and
Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in theatre management and business operations; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Work Environment:
The primary duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.

Essential Physical Abilities:
Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively on the telephone and in person;
Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and review, evaluate, and prepare a variety of written documents and text materials;
Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate standard office equipment and a personal computer;
Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift up to 20 pounds and to work in an office environment.
