AIRPORT OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN
Pay Grade: L19 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Group: Labor & Trades (L) Class Code: A060 Effective Date: 7/01 Revision Date: 8/03, 7/05
Classification Summary: The primary function of an employee in this class is to maintain all areas of the City of Chandler’s municipal airport that includes inspection and repair of runways, taxiways, ramps, buildings and grounds, airport and airfield lighting, aircraft fuel storage and distribution systems, security and fire systems, and airport emergency systems.
Essential Functions: Essential Functions are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills. They are intended to be accurate summaries of what the job classification involves and what is required to perform it. Employees are responsible for all other duties as assigned. Maintains the Chandler Airport to meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for certification for Airport operations; Maintains and repairs all airport electrical, lighting, and fuel equipment; maintains buildings, hangars, movement and non-movement area pavement, emergency equipment, and related equipment; Performs airport safety and security inspections for compliance with federal, state, and local airport rules and regulations; prepares the Airport for annual FAA certification inspection; Responds to aircraft emergencies, tower equipment failure, facility equipment failure, airfield navigational aides, airfield lighting failures, building/structure emergencies, and related emergency situations; Performs minor maintenance, repairs, and inspections on all vehicles and heavy equipment; Maintains, repairs, and inspects building and grounds, painting, carpentry, sprinkler system, weed control, and related duties; Cleans and adjusts all runway and taxiway directional signage; Operates airport sweeper to keep airport pavement free of foreign objects and debris; Maintains, repairs, and inspects runway, taxiways, airfield lighting, and all signs for pilot information and safety; Maintains paint striping on all runways and taxiways for both aircraft and ground maintenance and service vehicles; Assists the public if they need help; Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures; Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: Facilities and ground maintenance procedures and equipment; Airport operations, maintenance, and security; Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules and regulations governing airport maintenance and operation; Radio communication procedures and techniques; Federal (OSHA) regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices; Occupational hazards and safety precautions specific to airport maintenance work.
Ability to: Maintain and repair general and specialized airport facilities and equipment; Maintain a professional demeanor during stressful situations; Learn and apply emergency response procedures related to aircraft accidents and procedures for notification to regulating authorities; Keep alert and aware at all times to prevent injury or accident; Learn, understand, and interpret laws, rules, regulations, and policies; Carry out oral and written procedures and instructions; Interpret technical data from manuals and regulatory publications; Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Stay current on changing federal, state, county, and local guidelines and regulations pertaining to airport operations and maintenance; Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines; Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks; Operate a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties; Operate a motor vehicle; Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with the public and other employees.
Supervision Received: Work is performed under the general supervision of the Airport Maintenance and Operations Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED equivalency; Three (3) to five (5) years experience in ground and facilities maintenance; Pesticide Applicator’s license; and Valid Arizona class B Commercial Driver’s License; or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Desirable Qualifications: Experience at an airport.
Work Environment: The primary duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment that may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions and related hazards.
Essential Physical Abilities: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, discern emergency warnings and alarms, and understand department and safety rules and regulations; Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, work safely in heavy traffic areas, and operate light and medium duty equipment; Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a personal computer, operate equipment, operate hand and power tools, and make repairs to equipment; Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work in rough terrain, bend or stoop repeatedly, sit or stand for long periods of time, lift up to 50 pounds, access heavy equipment, work under vehicles and in confined spaces, remove and replace parts for repair and replacement, and work in an airport environment.
