Job Description
ASSISTANT NATURALIST

Pay Grade: 19                FLSA Status:    Non-Exempt        
Job Group: Supervisory (S)        Class Code: A078
Effective Date: 9/06                

Classification Summary:
The primary function of an employee in this class is to plan, conduct and supervise organized activities at the Environmental Education Center. An employee in this class may be assigned to other duties in the City's Parks and Recreation Division.

Essential Functions:
Essential Functions are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills. They are intended to be accurate summaries of what the job classification involves and what is required to perform it. Employees are responsible for all other duties as assigned.
Plans, initiates, promotes, and directs a specific recreation activity or group of related activities including but not limited to interpretive programs, wildlife viewing, water conservation, outdoor learning, outreach programs, plant observation, guided walks, indoor/outdoor interpretive exhibits, special events and environmental learning opportunities at the Environmental Education Center;
Assists in planning, organizing, scheduling and supervising an annual calendar of activities and programs, including large special events;
Plan and conduct community outreach activities to expand public understanding of the Environmental Education Center;
Coordinates activities with other program supervisors and city departments, arranging resource and facility schedules;
Supervises use of facilities, equipment, and supplies;
Supervises and assists in recruiting recreation leaders, including part-time, contract, and seasonal employees and volunteers;
Recruits and coordinates with event sponsors;
Contracts with outside suppliers and vendors;
Explains and demonstrates uses of equipment, supplies, and techniques used in activities;
Maintains attendance, activity, supply, and equipment records;
Maintains cash and financial records;
Assists in preparing manuals, rules and regulations, announcements, bulletins, and promotional materials;
Makes periodic written and oral reports, including budget updates and projections;
Formulates safety policies, regulations, and procedures;
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures;
Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City's Safety Handbook.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Attends committee and commission meetings as assigned including the Parks and Recreation Board;
Maintains and monitors grants;
Provides advise and counsel to businesses and organizations on special event planning;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Objectives, philosophy, and procedures of recreational programming in environmental and/or conservation education programs;
Skills, purposes, use and benefits of general and specific programs relating to natural and cultural history of the City, basic knowledge of wild plants and animals; and conservation ethics;
Planning, organizational, scheduling, coordination, and promotional techniques related to activities;
Program budgeting and financial management;
Supervisory skills, employee evaluations, and training methods;
Reservation and registration policies and procedures for facilities;
First aid and proper response in an emergency situation;
State and County health codes, tax requirements and other regulations for participants at special events;
Federal (OSHA) regulations and city policies regarding safe work and recreational practices.

Ability to:
Follow written and oral instructions;
Develop, organize, implement, promote, and supervise recreational activities following general guidelines, including the ability to adapt a program to specific circumstances;
Adhere to program standards and objectives outlined in city policy and by supervisors;
Prepare and deliver oral and written reports, maintain attendance, activity, and financial records, and perform program surveys and evaluations;
Work independently without direct supervision;
Complete multiple tasks, projects, events, duties and responsibilities simultaneously;
Monitor spending levels and reconcile to budgets;
Operate sports and recreational equipment related to specific programs;
Operate standard office equipment related to the position, including a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties;
Operate equipment related to sports and recreational activities, which may include a motor vehicle;
Communicate effectively with the public and other employees.

Supervision Received:
The work is performed under general supervision of the Naturalist.

Supervision Exercised:
May supervise activities and schedules of Customer Service Representatives, Recreation Leader I, II, and III employees and other assigned employees and volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required with college coursework in the natural sciences or cultural history;
One (1) to two (2) years experience of recent field experience in interpretive work relating to conservation, environmental education, or wildlife management, including supervisory experience; and
Valid Arizona Driver's License; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Desirable Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Natural Science, Natural Resource Management, Zoology, Cultural History, or related field;
Three (3) to five (5) years experience.

Work Environment:
The primary duties of this class are performed in a public building environment or an outdoor environment that may include working in adverse weather conditions.

Essential Physical Abilities:
Sufficient clarity of hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern and dispense verbal instructions;
Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written material and instructions and discern, supervise, and react to physical activities;
Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate sports and related office equipment;
Sufficient body flexibility, agility, and stamina to supervise recreational and sports activities.
