CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS TECHNICIAN
Pay Grade: L20 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Group: Labor & Trades (L) Class Code: C025 Effective Date: 7/01 Revision Date: 8/03, 7/05 Classification Summary: The primary function of an employee in this class is to provide quality acceptance to assure the requirements and intent of project plans and specifications are accomplished.
Essential Functions: Essential Functions are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills. They are intended to be accurate summaries of what the job classification involves and what is required to perform it. Employees are responsible for all other duties as assigned. Performs sand cone densities and nuclear densities on/in trenches; Performs concrete slump tests and prepares cylinders; Obtains and reports ambient and concrete temperatures, and ticket information from material suppliers for data sheets; Collects native proctor samples of soil, aggregate base course, and asphalt, when required during construction phases; Performs a full range of materials testing in the field and/or laboratory, including sieve analysis, plasticity index, asphalt marshall plugs, and unit weights ; Cuts asphalt cores with the unit weight determinations; Makes concrete cylinders, and strips and caps them to determine the compressive strength of the concrete; Uses specialized equipment and apparatus for testing of samples, including calibrated scales and weights, compressive testing machine, sieves and shaker, nuclear density gauge, and related equipment; Performs leak tests on radioactive materials; Maintains and calibrates concrete cones and rods to comply with federal and City guidelines and regulations; Utilizes prepared forms for accurate and clear test results which contain basic math information based on percentages/ratios/proportions according to, and in compliance with, standards and specifications prescribed by the City of Chandler; Performs yearly calibrations and inventories of laboratory equipment to comply with radiation regulatory agencies; Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures; Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: The specific standards and quality control tests for soil, asphalt, and concrete in accordance with (Maricopa Association Group) MAG and (American Society Testing Materials (ASTM) standards; Mathematical computations using fractions, percentages and calculations of quantities and ratios; Nuclear gauge compliance testing procedures; Operation of a personal computer and job-related software applications.
Ability to: Operate and maintain the apparatus used for testing materials in the field and the laboratory; Perform the full range of quality control tests on soils, asphalt, and concrete in the field and the laboratory; Perform basic mathematical calculations; Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisory personnel, and the public; Operate a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties; Operate a motor vehicle; Use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions; Perform all physical requirements of this class.
Supervision Received: The work is performed under the supervision of the Senior Inspector.
Supervision Exercised: None
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED equivalency; and Considerable experience in construction materials testing work or related field; Valid Arizona Driver’s License, or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Desirable Qualifications: ACI and NICET Certification.
Work Environment: The primary duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment that may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions, although some work is accomplished in an indoor office environment.
Essential Physical Abilities: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively in person and on a telephone, and hear within the normal range of conversation; Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, review a wide variety of written and electronic materials at arms length or less (distinguish letters and numbers), to see in detail objects or printed material at greater than arms length, and to sample and perform tests on construction materials; Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate specialized testing equipment, take samples from sites, operate a motor vehicle, and operate computer equipment; Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to bend or stoop repeatedly, sit or stand for extended periods of time, maneuver through rugged terrain, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform field testing procedures.
