Job Description
CUSTODIAL SUPERVISOR

Pay Grade: 20                 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Job Group: Supervisory (S)            Class Code: C036

Classification Summary:
The primary function of the Custodial Supervisor is to provide supervision and on-site coordination of the custodial staff and perform, when required, custodial and cleaning tasks in public buildings. This employee schedules and inspects work assignments, hires and trains new employees, evaluates employee performance, and trains current employees in new equipment and procedures. Duties include monitoring use of cleaning supplies, keeping time and attendance records, and maintaining cleaning product safety data sheets. Additionally, the employee may be assigned to other maintenance duties in the City’s Building and Facilities Division.

Essential Functions:

Supervises staff in custodial duties and assignments, reviews work to ensure cleanliness and sanitation standards are met;
Monitors preventative maintenance compliance and periodic schedule of cleaning procedures;
Trains new staff in use of cleaning equipment, chemicals, and techniques and trains current employees in new equipment and methodology;
Conducts safety training sessions;
Supervises staff time and attendance records, compliance with safety and procedure standards, and employee performance evaluations;
Allocates and accounts for cleaning supplies used, monitoring usage for budget compliance, and orders supplies;
Maintains product use safety data sheets;
Monitors contract work and contractors;
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures;
Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Participates in custodial duties as needed;
Schedules and participates in moving office furniture and equipment;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Supervisory skills and training methods;
Federal (OSHA) regulations City policies, and safe work practices relating to use of custodial equipment and cleaning agents;
Methods, materials, tools and standard practices for cleaning and maintaining public buildings;
Preparation, use, and disposal of chemical cleaning agents;
Appropriate use of cleaning agent for varied surface types;
Safety procedures when cleaning and moving furniture.

Ability to:
Follow written and oral instructions;
Prepare written reports;
Make work assignments and supervise their completion;
Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs to powered custodial equipment including, but not limited to, vacuums, strippers, waxers, buffers, shampoo cleaners and power washers;
Operate hand cleaning equipment including, but not limited to, brooms, dust and wet mops, dust pans, and dusters;
Operate a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties;
Train new and current employees in safety, cleaning, and maintenance procedures;
Interview job applicants;
Communicate effectively with the public and other employees.

Supervision Received:
The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised:
Provides supervision and on-site coordination of custodial staff.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED equivalency; and
Three (3) to five (5) years supervisory experience, preferably in the custodial field; and
Valid Arizona Driver’s License; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Work Environment:
The primary duties of the Custodial Supervisor are performed in a public building environment and include use of electrically powered cleaning equipment and cleaning substances that may involve related hazards.

Essential Physical Abilities:
Sufficient clarity of hearing and speech, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communications and communicate assignments and evaluations;
Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to distinguish dirt or marks on surfaces and move through unfamiliar buildings and rooms;
Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a variety of cleaning devices including powered equipment, hand equipment and small objects, and to make adjustments to equipment;
Sufficient strength to lift objects up to 70 pounds, move furniture, maneuver powered cleaning equipment such as vacuums and scrubbers, carry objects up to 70 pounds for a distance up to 150 yards, stand for periods of time up to three to four hours, and to adapt to and move between work stations and job tasks on a single shift;
Sufficient body flexibility and balance to perform cleaning operations which require repeated bending and stooping motions, including climbing and working on ladders;
Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work in areas with only artificial light, to work within a tightly enclosed area such as closets and small offices, and cleaning solutions and dust, to work while exposed to unpleasant odors and with allergenic substances such as
