CRIMINALIST II
Pay Grade: 24 FLSA Status: Exempt Job Group: Professional (P) Class Code: C078 Effective Date: 7/01 Revision Date: 8/03
Classification Summary: The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform professional work by examining, identifying and evaluating physical evidence; conducts skilled tests and analyses in connection with identification and evaluation of physical evidence by performing comprehensive scientific work in analytical chemistry, drug identification and blood alcohol; utilizes chemical, microscopic and chromatographic techniques and instrumentations. An employee in this position may conduct field investigations at crime scenes to search for, collect and preserve evidence for laboratory analysis, and reconstruct situations and physical evidence of a crime.
Essential Functions: Essential Functions are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills. They are intended to be accurate summaries of what the job classification involves and what is required to perform it. Employees are responsible for all other duties as assigned. Performs chemical and physical analyses in microscopic examinations; Makes serological analyses; Compares silicone casts and photographs of impressions and marks from shoes, tires, instruments, and other objects; Analyzes materials such as hair, skin, semen, blood, poisons, narcotics, debris, fire excellent, paints, glass, dirt, ink, paper, fabrics, bullets and casings, firearms, and other physical evidence; Prepares findings for court presentations and testifies concerning scientific facts as established in the analysis of evidence; Makes analyses with gas chromatographs; Examines evidence with filtered ultraviolet light, X-ray and infrared photography; Photographs a variety of impression marks; Conducts field investigations at scenes of crimes and other pertinent locations to obtain all relevant physical evidence; Performs lead duties in training, guiding and monitoring the work of a Criminalist I; Communicates and deals effectively with co-workers, the general public and other law enforcement agencies’ staff; Meets with members of the City and County Prosecutor’s Offices to develop court cases which involve chemical and/or instrumental analyses; Writes technical, scientific reports and prepares findings for court presentations; Testifies in court regarding scientific facts, discussing laboratory results with officers and attorneys; Compares analytical findings with known standards; interprets scientific data; Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures; Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: Modern criminal investigation and identification techniques and procedures; Crime scene procedures; Principles, methods and equipment of criminalists; Laws of evidence and criminal procedure; Instruments and equipment used in making laboratory analyses of collected evidence; Current developments, literature and sources of information in the field of criminalistics; State and federal statues, and case law covering contraband, drugs and the use of physical evidence in court, criminal procedures concerning time limits, discovery evidence and expert witnesses; Personal computers and applicable software to forensic science and associated fields of specialty.
Ability to: Perceive the full range of the color spectrum; Make accurate observations and records of test results; Communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing; Learn and apply rules of evidence, criminal procedure, crime scene procedures, state and federal statutes and case law covering drugs and the use of physical evidence in court; Produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper grammar; Enter data or information using a personal computer or other keyboard device; Observe, compare, or monitor data and objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating and safety standards.
Supervision Received: The work is directly supervised by the Police Forensics Services Section Manager.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Criminalistics, Physical Science or a related field which includes 30 semester hours in chemistry; and Five (5) years experience in a criminalistics laboratory performing laboratory analyses with proficiency in at least one forensic science; or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Work Environment: The duties of the position are performed in a laboratory environment with some work in the field.
