CRIME SCENE SUPERVISOR
Pay Grade: 25 FLSA Status: Exempt Job Group: Supervisory (S) Class Code: C095 Effective Date: 9/06, 07/07
Classification Summary: The primary function of an employee in this class is to serve as first-line supervisor for the crime scene response unit of the Forensic Lab.
Essential Functions: Essential Functions are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills. They are intended to be accurate summaries of what the job classification involves and what is required to perform it. Employees are responsible for all other duties as assigned. Serves as first-line shift or unit supervisor; schedules, assigns and evaluates the work of subordinates; ensures compliance with department policies, procedures, rules and regulations; Reads and reviews Crime Scene Technicians’ reports and work methods; evaluates case handling and results to ensure methods and procedures comply with departmental standards; Performs administrative duties including policy writing, complaint follow-up, supervisors’ meetings and training; Observes, monitors, and adheres to policies set forth by the City Police Department; Supervises efficiency of Crime Scene Technicians’ responding to calls; Instructs and assists subordinates in all aspects of their duties; Reports any cases of misconduct, neglect of duty, incompetence, and violations of general orders and department rules and regulations; Conducts ongoing inspections of personnel and their assigned equipment; Reviews, critiques, and approves reports filed by subordinates; Maintains employee work records and writes performance appraisals of subordinates; Performs various administrative and staff duties; Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures; Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.
Other Duties and Responsibilities: May make court appearances and offer testimony.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: State, City, and other applicable statutes; The operation of a personal computer and various software applications for word processing, spreadsheets, database management, etc.; Record keeping practices and procedures; Principles and practices of supervision and training; Police Department functions, procedures, policies, goals, organization, general orders, and rules and regulations; Methods, objectives, and procedures of court proceedings; Operation of a personal computer and job-related software.
Ability to: Train, assign, motivate, and evaluate the work of others to ensure the quality and efficiency of work, the understanding of their responsibilities, and the resolution of their questions; Supervise and lead subordinates through instruction in the performance of their duties; Cope with stressful situations calmly, fairly, tactfully, and with respect for individual rights; Establish and maintain effective relations with fellow employees and with citizens with varied racial, ethnic, or economic backgrounds; Keep immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems; Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks; Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines; Operate a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties; Operate a motor vehicle; Operate general office equipment; Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with the public and other employees. Supervision Received: Work is performed under the supervision of the Forensic Services Manager.
Supervision Exercised: Supervision is exercised over the work of assigned Crime Scene Technicians and support staff.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Forensics, Criminalistics, Chemistry or related field; and Four (4) to six (6) years of forensic crime scene work for a law enforcement agency including supervisory or lead experience; and Valid Arizona Driver’s License; or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Work Environment: The primary duties of this class are performed in both a general office environment and an outdoor environment that may include exposure to adverse weather conditions and potential personal danger.
