The primary function of an employee in this class is to plan and supervise organized recreation activities at an assigned school, park, or recreation center. The emphasis of a Recreation Leader III class of employee is the development and implementation of a specialized program. An employee in this class may be assigned to other duties in the City's Parks and Recreation Division.

Plans and directs a general program of recreation at an assigned school or activity center, including sports programs, drama, music, dancing, and arts and crafts programs;
Organizes and directs hobby, adult, and youth groups, with an emphasis on programs for youth;
Supervises a variety of competitive and non-competitive games, stunts, contests, and instructional and classroom activities;
Supervises and directs Recreation Leader I and II employees assigned to assist;
Officiates at sports contests and may prepare the playing field and instruct participants;
Issues and receives recreation equipment such as balls, bats, gloves, nets, and horseshoes;
Accepts and processes reservations and registrations for individuals, groups, and facilities; maintains schedules for recreation facility use;
Recruits and trains program volunteers;
Organizes and supervises field trips;
Maintains attendance and activity records, score cards, and team standings;
Maintains accident, incident, and emergency reports;
Makes periodic written and oral reports, including budget updates and projections;
May render first aid;
Maintains order during activities and enforces rules and regulations;
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures;
Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City's Safety Handbook.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Methods and techniques of recreation activity and program planning;
Philosophy and objectives of public recreation;
Child psychology, sociology and personal health and hygiene;
Supervisory skills, employee evaluations, and training methods;
Rules and regulations of athletic competition such as basketball, baseball, softball and other games and sports;
A large variety of recreational activities suitable for children, adolescents, and adults;
Arts and crafts, including dramatics, music, and rythmics;
First aid and proper response in an emergency situation;
Supervisory skills and training methods;
Federal (OSHA) regulations and city policies regarding safe work and recreational practices.
Follow written and oral instructions;
Develop, organize, and supervise recreational activities following general guidelines, including the ability to adapt a program to specific and immediate circumstances;
Read and interpret recreation manuals, including game and activity instructions, rules, and standards;
Adhere to program standards and objectives outlined in city policy and by supervisors;
Instruct participants in individual and group activities;
Accompany groups of all ages on field trips and off-site activities;
Enforce sport and activity rules and regulations;
Open, prepare, and supervise the use of, and break down and close, a recreational facility, which may include rearranging classrooms and moving furniture;
Prepare written reports, maintain attendance and activity records, perform program surveys and evaluations, and maintain registration and reservation records;
Operate standard office equipment related to the position including a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties;
Operate equipment related to sports and recreational activities, which may include a motor vehicle;
Communicate effectively with the public and other employees.
The work is performed under the direct supervision of a Recreation Coordinator.
This position may supervise activities of and schedule Recreation Leader I and II employees.
High school diploma or GED equivalency; and
One (1) to two (2) years of experience in a youth recreation or adult activity program; and
Valid Arizona's Driver's License; and
First Aid and CPR/AED certifications may be required depending on assignment; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Three (3) years college preparation in Recreation, Physical Education, or related field;
The primary duties of this class are performed in a public building environment or an outdoor environment that may include working in adverse weather conditions.
Essential Physical Abilities:
Sufficient clarity of hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern and dispense verbal instructions;
Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and discern, supervise, and react to physical activities;
Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate sports and related office equipment;
Sufficient body flexibility, agility, and stamina to supervise and participate in outdoor and indoor physical, recreational and sports activities.
