Chandler area teams win second and third place in 2012 Battle of the Books Regional Championship
Sixth grade students from Riggs, Sanborn, and St. John Bosco schools represented Chandler in the Battle of the Books Regional Championship in Mesa on May 22, 2012. The three-person teams from Riggs and St. John Bosco won two of the top three spots in the competition against students from Chandler, Gilbert, Higley, Mesa, Queen Creek, and Combs schools.
In Chandler, a total of 1,089 students from 32 schools competed in the 2012 Battle of the Books, which included school, city and regional competitions over several weeks. While St. John Bosco is a Catholic School located in the Ahwatukee area, they participated in the Chandler competition because no other school districts in their vicinity were involved in the Battle of the Books.
In preparation for the event, each team of three students competes at the school level reading four assigned books three times during the year. During the final competitions, the teams are asked detailed questions about all 12 books.
The first place team for the 2012 Battle of the Books was Highland in Mesa. In second place was Riggs Elementary from Chandler, with team members Cassidy Fredette-Roman, Maggie Orr, and Elle Weiand. St. John Bosco School students Eleanor Carlos, Francesca Casillas, Sierra Hendershot took third place. Also representing Chandler was the Sanborn Elementary team of Steve Lamer, Dayton Larson, Max Yarter. Riggs had won the Chandler semi-final competition in May
The Battle of the Books program in Chandler was sponsored this year by the Kiwanis Club of Chandler, which has set aside funding to provide annual support for the competition. The Chandler Public Library, represented by Jo Librizzi, and the Chandler Unified School District, represented by Kathy Gamard, also sponsor this program. This is the 14th year that Chandler has participated in the Battle of the Books with other East Valley cities.
