City offers funding to organizations hosting community festivals and special events

The City’s Special Events Sponsorship Program is now accepting applications from non-profit organizations that would like funding support for hosting special events in the community.

Each year since 2002, the City Council has approved $30,000 in funding to be allocated to organizations that present quality special events in Chandler. Funding will be awarded to qualifying events that enhance the community through such areas as cultural and educational enrichment, diversity and heritage, community pride, and economic vitality.

“Every year, we have a lot of great family-friendly events that celebrate our community’s diversity, culture and heritage,” said Mayor Jay Tibshraeny. “This program is one small way we can show our support for the organizations that take on the responsibility of hosting these events.”

Applications are now available online at www.chandleraz.gov/special-events and must be returned to the City’s Special Event Coordinator by 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2012. A panel of six citizens who currently serve on City-appointed boards and commissions will review the applications. The panel recommendations will then be submitted to the Chandler Cultural Foundation for approval. Awards will be announced at the end of September.

Last year, 14 organizations received funding for their events, including: Recreation & Athletics for the Disabled (Spring Sock Hop); Arizona Railway Museum (National Train Day); Xico, Inc (Dia de los Muertos); ICAN (Family Fun Run); Live Love (Live Love Day-Chandler); Damsha Irish Dance Company (Feis in the Desert); Arizona Classic Jazz Society (Arizona Classic Jazz Festival); and others.
