August 16, 2012 Chandler City Council Meeting Recap

The Chandler City Council met at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2012, and took action on 50 agenda items, including;
  • Approved the rezoning of a 22-acre parcel at the southeast corner of Arizona Avenue and Chandler Heights Road to allow for a 392-unit multi-family residential development.
  • Approved the acquisition of temporary rights of entry needed for a water main replacement project to occur in an area bounded by Erie Street on the north,  Chandler Boulevard on the south, Nebraska Street on the east, and Hartford Street on the west.
  • Approved a revised agreement with the Union Pacific Railroad Company for the reconstruction and widening of Ocotillo Road across the Union Pacific Railroad east of Arizona Avenue for an estimated amount of $621,251.
  • Authorized an intergovernmental agreement with the Arizona Department of Transportation for cost sharing for drainage improvements to the Thude Park Drainage Basin located at Galveston Street and the Price Freeway.
  • Authorized a grant agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration to accept a grant of up to $275,000 for the construction of an Automated Weather Observation System at Chandler Municipal Airport.
  • Extended an agreement with West Valley Uniforms, Inc., for the purchase of police uniforms in an amount not to exceed $130,000.
  • Approved a $67,679 amendment to an existing $536,407 agreement with the Carbon Activated Corporation for the purchase of additional filter media for use at the Chandler Surface Water Treatment Plant. 
  • Extended for two additional years, an agreement with HD Supply Waterworks for the purchase of up to 7,600 new meters and 3,000 automated meter reading registers at a cost not to exceed $1.9 million.
  • Extended for an additional year, a construction contract with M. R. Tanner Development & Construction to enable the rehabilitation of 26 lane miles of streets in Chandler by milling out the old asphalt, repairing the base, crack sealing and repaving the street.
  • Extended an agreement with Brooks Bros Utility Contractors to provide streetlight replacement services for an amount not to exceed $120,000. Under the agreement, an estimated 70 streetlights may be replaced and/or upgraded.
  • Approved agreements with SolarCity to provide solar arrays to the City Hall and Police/Courts parking garages and roof of the Police Administration Building for 20 years in a pre-paid amount of $416,840.
  • Awarded $991,255 in design and construction contracts to Salt River Project to relocate and underground electrical service to accommodate the widening of Gilbert Road south of Queen Creek Road.
  • Approved the purchase from Motorola Solutions of 206 new police radios for an amount not to exceed $1,097,415, replacing radios that have exceeded their recommended lifespan.
  • Granted a Use Permit for a Series 12 and Series 7 license to Covo Café to sell all types of alcohol for on-premise consumption. The 2,400 square foot historic building is located on Chicago Street east of Arizona Avenue and was once a welding shop, but is being redeveloped for restaurant use.
  • Approved a temporary extension of the alcohol serving area for Kokopelli Winery and Bistro on east Boston Street for their Kokopelli Krush event being held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19-21.
  • Approved a Special Event Liquor License for Ear Candy Productions, Inc., for an Oktoberfest event being held Saturday Sept. 29 at Dr. A. J. Chandler Park in downtown Chandler.
  • Approved a Special Event Liquor License for the Downtown Chandler Community Partnership for the Rock the Block Celebration on Sat. Nov. 10 along Arizona Avenue between Chicago and Buffalo Streets.
  • Continued until the Sept. 13 Council meeting, action on a Use Permit that would allow automobile sales north of the northeast corner of Chandler Boulevard and 56th Street due to concerns about adequate parking. Staff will work with the landlord and tenant to address parking concerns.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor Jay Tibshraeny congratulated  Intel for their recent announcement regarding the construction of a $300 million research and development facility at Chandler Boulevard and Ray Road, saying the project will result in 1,000 construction jobs and hundreds of new, permanent jobs.

He also invited the public to a Fire Department Open House occurring from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Fire Station #6, 911 N. Jackson Street, and encouraged residents to participate in one of two new neighborhood academies starting up next month in Chandler.  More information is available at www.chandleraz.gov/neighborhoods.

Finally, the Mayor congratulated resident Jo Sheeler for her induction into the United Blood Services Hall of Fame for her numerous blood donations over the years and encouraged citizens to donate. The Mayor and Council also encouraged residents to vote in the upcoming August 28 Primary Election.
