Environmental Education Center celebrates Earth Day, Arbor Day

Show Mother Earth some love by attending Chandler’s 8th Annual Earth and Arbor Day Celebration from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 23, at the Environmental Education Center (EEC).

In celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day, the recreation facility is hosting a free, family friendly event to educate the community on easy and simple ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle. This year’s event features hands-on activities, live animal presentations and educational demonstrations highlighting green products, conversation and more. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet special guests, like Smokey the Bear, courtesy of the U.S. Forest Service.

“Saving the Earth doesn’t have to take drastic changes,” explains Daniella Rodriguez, Recreation Coordinator at the EEC. “Simple lifestyle changes and daily incorporation of earth-friendly practices in your routine can make every day Earth Day.”

The fun-filled morning culminates with an Arbor Day tree planting dedication at 10 a.m. in Veterans Oasis Park. Guests can reserve their spot on the planting team by visiting the EEC Information Booth the day of the event. This year, long-standing community partner Arizona Public Service Electric Company donated two Mesquite trees contributing to Chandler’s efforts to be recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

The EEC will remain open normal business hours during the event so the community can experience the latest exhibits in the lobby, including entries from the EEC’s 2016 Nature Photo Contest. Attendees also can enjoy a variety of vendors, merchants, prize giveaways, special outdoor activities and shopping at the Owl’s Nest Nature Store featuring a variety of eco-friendly products and nature inspired books and toys.

“Participating in our fun and informative Earth Day activities with your family is a great way to kick start better actions around a cleaner, greener environment,” says Rodriguez. “Plus, it gives families and friends the perfect excuse to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and environment around us.”
