Discover the joy of holiday shopping at home in Chandler

By Councilmember Nora Ellen

Traditionally, Black Friday marks the kickoff of the holiday shopping season with advertisements and deals proliferating across various media platforms. The pressure to find the perfect gifts at a bargain price can be stressful, but there are ways to make this experience joyful and rewarding. Chandler is fortunate to have a vibrant small business community and outstanding retail, dining and entertainment venues to excite and inspire the most diverse customers. Shopping locally not only benefits our economy, but it also strengthens our social ties.

When we shop within our City limits, we invest in our community on many levels. Each dollar spent in Chandler supports jobs and the livelihood of independent business owners. It also supports the quality of life that we have come to expect. In fact, our City is highly dependent on sales tax revenue to fund municipal services such as road improvement projects, parks, as well as police, fire, health and medical services and recreational offerings. It is not too far-fetched to say that local transactions will benefit you more in the long-run than purchases made online or at large retail chain stores.

Also, there is much to be said about the importance of connecting with people and fostering community pride. Despite our incredible growth, Chandler still is able to promote a small town atmosphere through our special events, traditions and family friendly amenities. When I bring guests to Downtown Chandler, they often are pleasantly surprised by the high quality of restaurants, boutiques and live entertainment options available. Shopping at the Art Walk and Farmers Market are wonderful ways to find unique and creative gifts while interacting with artisans and other residents or visitors. The Chandler Center for the Arts also offers outstanding performances, especially during the Christmas season. Single tickets or classic series packages (for five shows) would surprise anyone who appreciates the arts. For those who prefer homemade gifts, there are plenty of craft stores and specialty shops throughout the City that offer classes and tutorials.

There are so many ways to have fun shopping this time of the year. Enjoy the creativity involved with finding or making the perfect gifts for your loved ones. I encourage you to bring a friend and discover new areas of the City in Uptown Chandler, Ocotillo, West Chandler and the Chandler Fashion Center Mall and surrounding area. Look for local referrals on social media and post recommendations for others to visit local merchants. I wish you a wonderful Christmas season and hope you will enjoy your experience shopping in Chandler as much as I do.
