All of these genres describe sounds that move us, and The Sugar Thieves blend all of these influences to create a sound that moves audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Their goal is to share their passion for great songs with the audience by exhibiting high energy showmanship and raw emotion with every performance. Firmly rooted in the blues, the Sugar Thieves have a love for all things Americana. On any given night the band will mix original songs with American covers spanning the last 120 years.
Based in Phoenix, Arizona, the Sugar Thieves have taken the Southwest by storm. They regularly tour throughout the USA and Mexico and to Europe on an annual basis. The Sugar Thieves have shared a bill with Taj Mahal, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, The Flaming Lips, The Blues Brothers, Lucinda Williams, Robert Cray, and more. They've recorded and produced five albums, each containing a variety of original music and old songs reinvented.
The Sugar Thieves started as a Duo in 2006, consisting of Meridith Moore's deep and colorful vocals, and Mikel Lander's gritty and gutsy guitar picking style, and vocal approach. Today they are backed by the most talented rhythm section west of the Mississippi. Todd Chuba on drums boasts a thirty-year career in music and has shared a stage with the likes of Glen Campbell and David Grisman. He is a wall of sound behind the kit and embraces perfection in his approach to each and every tune. Shea Marshall, on plenty of instruments including keys, sax, harmonica, and even railroad spikes, has been with The Sugar Thieves since their very first concert. He is well known for his uniquely universal and ecumenical approach to instruments and styles. Jeff Naylor on upright and electric bass is a force to reckon with. His expressive showmanship and hard playing capture any audience. He also compliments the band with backup vocals. Together The Sugar Thieves are an uplifting and unforgettable musical experience.
Bio: Tommy "Bluz" Grills is originally from Rochester NY where he grew up being exposed to some of the top jazz blues and folks artists of that time while working at his Fathers' Night Club the "Nugget Pizza Palace" in the late 60s thru early 70s. But it was the crossover Classic by BB King "The Thrill is Gone" that inspired Tom to play the Blues. "It was the vocal-like quality of BBs guitar, he could make it cry" that made Tom want to play like BB. Thru this, he discovered Albert King whose style spoke deeply to Tom where as a young lad in High School he would sit for hours playing along with the record 'Live Wire Blues Power", the seminal release of Albert's 1970 performance at the Fillmore West. Also, Freddie King whose Shelter Records release "Going Down" set Tom on the road to blues Nirvana. Soon names like Elmore James, Earl Hooker, Son Seals, Robert Johnson, Little Walter, T-Bone Walker, Jimmy Reed started appearing in Toms' record collection. But it was meeting the Legendary James Cotton in 1977 that gave Tom his first taste of playing with a blues giant. Tom also jammed with Robert Jr Lockwood and Albert Collins in the years to come.
Tom played in the James Cotton Big band in the late 80s. Also during the 80s and 90s, Tom fronted his own band in NY and partnered up with Rochester’s Joe Beard for shows in Buffalo and the Dinosaur Bar B que Express in Syracuse. In 1993 Tom moved to Phoenix to thaw out from the NY winters. He formed the Tom Grills Band which won the Phoenix Blues Society's' statewide Blues showdown 2 years in row ’93 and ‘94. Tom went on to play with Arizona’s own King of the Blues Big Pete Pearson in the early 90s and again in 1999-2003. During this time Tom recorded the CD "One More Drink" with Big Pete Pearson. Tom co-wrote many of the original songs which received international acclaim. Tom performed monthly at the Rhythm Room with Big Pete and even backed up Nappy Brown for a weekend at The Rhythm Room. Nappy who wrote the Ray Charles hit "the Night time is the right time", and he said Tom played with more feeling than any other guitarist he has worked with.
Tom has opened up for Albert King, James Cotton, Savoy Brown, Joe King Carusco, Matt Guitar Murphy, Robert Cray. Tom has performed at these major outdoor events: the Glendale Jazz and Blues Fest, Phoenix Blues Society Blues Blast, Desert Botanical Gardens, and the Taste of Scottsdale. Tom is currently doing studio work in addition to pre-production on an upcoming cd of his own this year.
