CHANDLER, Ariz. – The City of Chandler has been awarded a $2 million grant to initiate a pilot micro-transit service in South Chandler. The grant was awarded through the Arizona Transportation Modernization Grant Program, a $20 million initiative to modernize K-12 transportation options and improve access to reliable and safe transportation for students.
The City hopes to learn from this two-year pilot how to better serve the needs of individual students through a micro-transit van program for students who face transportation barriers and who are often traveling early in the morning and late at night.
The study will help staff better understand public transportation demand in the service area, and to determine if additional service is needed in a specific location. Trips by day, and time of day, will also be closely monitored to identify any needs for additional or fewer vehicles in service at a specific time. Following the two-year pilot period, the program can serve as a model to other transit systems.
The new service will operate in a portion of South Chandler, roughly south of Chandler Boulevard and east of Price Road. Students in the service area being proposed are at a further disadvantage because public transportation options are extremely limited compared to other parts of Chandler and the Phoenix metropolitan area.
The funding awarded to Chandler will cover most of the startup costs and two years of operating costs for the new service.
About Arizona Transportation Modernization Grants:
The Arizona Transportation Modernization Grants Program was established in the FY2022 budget by the Arizona State Legislature. The grant program provides resources to incubate and advance ideas to improve access to reliable and safe transportation for students who attend a district school through open enrollment or attend a public charter school, and to accelerate innovation and efficiency solutions in all systems. Information about each of the grant awardees can be found at AZ Transportation Grant Awardee.
