The Chandler Fire Department is among the nation’s elite, ranking in the top one percent (1%) in fire suppression capabilities with a Class 1 rating according to the leading supplier of statistical information to the fire insurance industry.
The Insurance Services Organization (ISO) evaluated Chandler’s Fire Department and municipal water supply system to establish a Public Protection Classification (PPC) — a number from 1 to 10. Class 1 generally represents superior property fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area’s fire suppression program does not meet ISO’s minimum criteria. Chandler’s classification improved from a Class 3 to a Class 1. The prior rating had been in place since 1991.
"This exceptional evaluation shows that Chandler has one of the finest firefighting systems in the nation, based on our infrastructure, equipment, training and results,” said Chandler Fire Chief Tom Dwiggins. “It is a testament to all the hard working men and women of the Chandler Fire Department, along with the tremendous support we’ve received over the years from the Mayor, City Council and the community.”
The ISO’s review evaluated the City’s water supply system, emergency communications systems, fire department equipment, staffing, training, and geographic deployment of fire companies and risk reduction efforts.
Most U.S. insurers of homes and business properties use ISO’s PPC ratings in calculating premiums. In general, the price of fire insurance in a community with a good rating is substantially lower than in a community with a poor rating.
“There are a lot of people who’ve worked hard over the years to invest in and build up our Fire Department into the professional fire protection service that it is today,” said Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny. “I commend Chief Dwiggins and his staff, along with the Public Works and Utilities Department and our City Manager’s Office for their contributions to this outstanding accomplishment and for always keeping the safety of our residents as the top priority.”
About 305 fire departments out of approximately 46,000 nationwide hold a top ISO Class 1 Rating. Additionally, Chandler Fire is one of only 60 departments in the nation that have both a Class 1 Rating and International Accreditation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
