The second in the Museum in a Box series of take-home activity kits offered by the Chandler Museum is now available, just in time for Día de los Muertos holiday celebrations. The “Day of the Dead: Remembering Family” Museum in a Box offers families several activities they can enjoy together to learn about Day of the Dead, a holiday with origins in southern Mexico, which is centered on family and celebrates life.

“Day of the Dead: Remembering Family” contains a book plus supplies and activity guides for three family activities that will help you learn about the holiday and remember your own ancestors. Activities include: making tissue paper marigold flowers, using a molinillo (wooden whisk) to make Mexican hot chocolate, playing a game to help remember the names of ancestors, and reading “I Remember Abuelito: A Day of the Dead Story.”

“These boxes are a great way to explore culture, history, and art from home,” said Tiffani Egnor, Education Coordinator at the Chandler Museum. “We are excited to provide them for families looking for fun, educational, and screen-free activities.” This box accompanies the traveling exhibition, “A Celebration of Souls: Day of the Dead in Southern Mexico,” on display at the Chandler Museum through November 29.

“Day of the Dead: Remembering Family” boxes cost $14 and are available at the Chandler Museum Store, 300 S. Chandler Village Drive. The store is open during Museum hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. The facility is closed on Mondays.

The first Museum in a Box, “Build It: Frank Lloyd Wright in Chandler,” debuted in August and is still available. Additional Museum in a Box themes are coming soon, including a Date Night box designed for adults and a preschool box for 3-5 year-olds and their caregivers.
