The new Chandler Museum will debut with the renowned national traveling exhibition Awkward Family Photos when it officially opens its doors on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018. The exhibition explores the family experience – all those perfectly imperfect moments we share with the people we love most. To augment the exhibit with local flavor, Chandler Museum staff is seeking photo submissions from the community to be part of a digital screen display.

Awkward Family Photos showcases exactly what the name implies, more than 200 photos of families immortalized in awkward moments and presented in funky and vintage frames. Awkward Family Photos will be on display Dec. 8, through Jan. 19, 2019. A free public reception for the exhibit will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17.

To submit a memorable family photo for the exhibit’s local display, email a jpg image to chandler.museum@chandleraz.gov. Then visit the exhibit to view your photo on the digital display. If you need assistance scanning a printed photo, drop your photo off at the museum to be scanned starting Dec. 8. Please note that your submission is to the Chandler Museum. Photos will not be shared with awkwardfamilyphotos.com or included in future presentations of this traveling exhibit. Depending on the number of submissions, the digital display may not showcase all photos.

Chandler Museum staff member, Lizzie Olson, is an Awkward Family Photo alum.  Her fourth grade class photo will be included in the exhibit. Olson explained, “It’s so fun to look through old photos and reminisce with my family about life’s funny moments. I wanted to submit a photo after laughing so hard, wondering ‘What was I thinking?’ My outfit and hair style seemed so normal then, but now we just look back and laugh about it.”

The new Chandler Museum is nearing completion at 300 S. Chandler Village Drive. Hours of operation will be Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
