Teens and pre-teens from across the Valley will soon gather at the Chandler Hamilton Library to celebrate all things sci-fi, fantasy, anime, cosplay and gaming. The Library’s eighth annual LibCon is a teens-only convention for fans of comics, video games and pop culture. The free event offers teens a supportive environment to connect over shared hobbies and interests.
This year, LibCon will take place after regular library hours at the Chandler Hamilton Library from 6-9:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, at 3700 S. Arizona Ave. Returning this year will be a cosplay fashion show, as well as the K-Pop groups from both Hamilton High and Basha High. There will be a DJ playing music, as well as emceeing the event. Two food vendors will be available selling snacks and Hamilton High Digital Arts Club members will demonstrate how they create the digital art they’ve imagined.
LibCon began eight years ago as a program targeting young people ages 12-18 who wanted to have the “con” experience – like the recent Phoenix Comic Fest – but without adults, traveling time to Phoenix and expenses. Today, Chandler Public Library’s LibCon is an annual program that teens not only love to attend, but participate in as well. This is a well-attended, free convention where teens can be themselves in a safe environment.
Library Assistant, Allyson Bullock, who has been part of the planning staff for the past three years, says, “The costumes and cosplay that the teens create and wear are always a hit. The time and effort some attendees put into their outfits is amazing. They are so well thought out and inventive that they look just like the character they are representing.”
In order to help teens prepare for the event, a “Cos’truction Workshop” will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at the Chandler Basha Library, 5990 South Val Vista Drive. Participants can bring their materials and designs to work on a costume during this drop-in workshop. Sewing machines, scissors, cutting boards and other tools of the costume construction trade will be available to use. Basic sewing and cutting guidance will be provided as needed. Registration is required and can be found on the library’s website.
