Trashion Fashion Show takes the runway Oct. 14
Chandler's 3rd Annual Trashion Fashion Show will be a sight to behold as 25 local contestants don their inventive and sometimes outlandish garments made from recyclable materials.
The free show begins at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Chandler Fashion Center and promises to evoke applause, wonder and occasional laughter as the trash-happy designers strut their stuff.
"It's hard to wrap your mind around some of the amazing ideas our contestants come up with," said Traci Conaway, Chandler's Recycling Coordinator. "We have some really creative people who think outside the recyclable box!"
Conaway organized the event as a unique way to get people thinking differently about waste, re-use and upcycling. At least 75 percent of each garment must be made from recyclable or reused materials that would otherwise be thrown away or recycled. Entries will be judged in three age categories; ages 10-13, 14-17 and 18-plus.
Some of the materials used in last year's winning entries included VHS tape, used CDs, caution tape, wire hangers, PVC pipe, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic containers and a vinyl sheet from a Twister® game.
"You never know what you're going to see!" exclaimed Conaway.
