Child car safety seat installation and inspection clinics available through Chandler Fire Dept.
The Chandler Fire Department is offering parents and caregivers free car seat inspections and training to help ensure that the child safety seats in their vehicles are the right size and have been properly installed. The clinics are offered most Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, at various sites around the City, and appointments are available by calling 480-782-2046.
The Chandler Child Safety Seat Program uses certified car seat technicians (Chandler Fire personnel) to inspect and install car seats, and educate parents and caregivers on their proper use. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children ages 2 to 14, due in large part to the nonuse or improper use of child seats and seat belts.
The program is made possible through a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). The grant provides the funding needed to have the personnel available for the installation clinics. Through the GOHS, the department is also able to provide a free child safety seat to those people in need of one but who can’t afford one.
Clinic locations rotate among various sites around the City, including the Chandler Fire Training Facility, Chandler Regional Hospital, and Chandler Fire Headquarters. Appointments are approximately 30 minutes in length for each car seat installation. Unscheduled drive-ups are accepted on a first come, first served basis, as the schedule permits. The most up-to-date clinic schedule is online at www.chandleraz.gov/fire.
“Firefighters often see the danger posed by improperly installed car safety seats, or seats that are not being used correctly,” said Chandler Battalion Chief Brad Miller. “This service is one way we are trying to make a difference. Every child deserves to be protected.”
While the clinics are free, Chandler Fire personnel do have one simple request. “Kids get messy, so back seats get messy. We just ask that you clean your car seats thoroughly before your appointment,” Miller added.
