Chandler Centennial scholarship applications for fall semester CGCC students due May 25

Students planning to enroll at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) for the fall 2012 semester still have time to apply for a $500 Chandler Centennial scholarship. The application deadline is May 25, and at least eight $500 scholarships will be awarded in June. Students can apply online at,  or follow the link on the Centennial website at

The scholarships were created through a partnership between the Chandler Centennial Steering Committee and CGCC. They are intended to honor the many educational institutions that have served the people of Chandler through the decades and their positive impact on the community.

Scholarship applicants are required to be U.S. citizens and Chandler residents with plans to attend CGCC in the fall 2012 semester and successfully complete a minimum of six credit hours. They must also have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (high school or college) and qualify for in-state and in-county tuition. In addition, applicants are required to write an essay of up to 500 words describing how long he or she has been a Chandler resident and how the community has positively impacted his or her life.

To date, more than $4,000 has been collected through donations from the public, local service organizations, and corporate partners. The Kiwanis Club of Chandler and the Chandler Quilting Guild both donated $500, while the Whole Foods Market at Ray Road and the 101 Price Freeway donated nearly $3,000.

“Centennial supporters created these scholarships to help Chandler students follow their path towards success and to build a bridge between the generations,” said Centennial Coordinator Jean Reynolds. “We are grateful to the men and women of the Chandler Kiwanis Club and the Quilting Guild at the Chandler Senior Center for their generosity. The management of Whole Foods Chandler also stepped up in a huge way to support our efforts.”

Donations are still being accepted by check, online with a credit card, or by phone through a text-to-donate option. Details are online at or call 480-782-2751 for more information.
