Experience how fun science can be at the Chandler Science Spectacular

The City of Chandler invites the public to experience a whole new side of science during the two-day Chandler Science Spectacular.

The two-day event will be in Downtown Chandler, along Commonwealth Avenue, between Buffalo and Boston streets. It kicks off with a Night of Art and Science from 6-10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 19, and will feature more than 50 local artisans from the Chandler Art Walks, as well as special Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) guests with demonstrations and interactive displays. Attendees can learn about 3D printing, check out some robots, get lost looking at a large-scale, space inspired street art mural, try a hand at chemistry, watch an artist make a wire sculpture live, all while enjoying live music and perusing artwork.

The following day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20, features the annual Science Saturday. This event will entertain the entire family and explain how fun, creative and important science can be to daily life.

Nearly 50 exhibits will be on display during Science Saturday, including:
  • Computer science: Intel will feature Makey Makey/Sparkfun kits and activities regarding fundamental basics of computer science. Stop by and engage in the fun!
  • Foam block building: The Arizona Science Center & First Things First will have giant foam blocks of all shapes on display to build a design they create.
  • Space travel: Travel through the solar system with a game truck spaceship.
  • Lego robotics: Kids will challenge Lego Mindstorms through obstacle courses hosted by PayPal.
  • Rocket launch: See how Orbital ATK puts rockets into space with a hands-on rocket-launching demo.
  • Photography, nature and technology: The Tonto Creek Camp will share a brief history of cameras and the progression of technology from film to digital. Participants will take pictures of a nature scene with animals and journal about it.
  • Aviation: Using a wind tunnel and flight simulator, attendees will get a glimpse into the exciting world of aviation by UND Aerospace.
  • Crime scene and fingerprinting: Help the Chandler Police Department solve a mystery at this interactive mock crime scene, or learn how to read fingerprints when they are left as clues.
  • Technology at the Library: Discover VERTEX, Chandler Public Library's series of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) programs. See a 3D printer in operation, explore tornadoes in a bottle, straw rockets and much more!
  • Breaking boards & science: Sport Science of Martial Arts - Who knew how fun applied physics can be? Feel the explosive power of changing acceleration or changing mass when you attempt to break plastic boards.
  • Lava lamp creation: Primavera Online High School will encourage participants to make their own Flubber or personal Lava Lamp to learn about oil and water.
  • Stormtroopers – Calling all Star Wars fans! Come take a photo with members of the Empire’s army.
The annual Chandler Science Spectacular is part of the Arizona SciTech Festival, a statewide movement to promote and celebrate science in our daily lives and to earn recognition for Arizona as a science and technology hub. The Chandler Science Spectacular is sponsored by Intel, and all events are free and open to the public.

Free parking is available at the Ports America parking garage (south of Buffalo Street, east of Arizona Avenue) and the First Credit Union parking garage (north of Boston Street, east of Arizona Avenue).
