The City of Chandler has contracted with Haydon Building Corp and Consultant Engineering (CEI) for construction to widen Ocotillo Road to four lanes (two lanes in each direction), from Gilbert Road to 148th Street. Improvements include construction of raised medians, bike lanes, center turn lanes, sidewalks, curb, gutter, street lighting, traffic signal and drainage improvements, landscaping, and utility relocations.
The project includes drainage improvements such as retention basins and concrete scuppers to accommodate future drainage needs in the project area. In addition, there will be improvements to traffic signals and the traffic signal interconnect, as well as new LED street lighting and conversion of overhead electric power to underground.
The project received federal funds for design, and a combination of federal and local funding for construction. Construction began in late November 2022 and scheduled to take approximately 9 months to complete.
CONSTRUCTION INFO (Sep. 22, 2023):
- Scheduled for Monday, Sep. 25, paving crews will continue with the final course (top layer) of asphalt on the north side of Ocotillo Road, from east of Mustang Drive/140th Street to Cobblestone. To accommodate this work, due to the intense activity at the intersection of Ocotillo Road and Mustang Drive/140th Street, flaggers will be in place to assist in managing traffic and Mustang Drive will be CLOSED on the south side of Ocotillo Road from approximately 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Sep. 25. Subsequent to the paving, utility adjustments and striping will take place in the newly paved segments for traffic restrictions to be removed to the extent possible. As the paving activity crosses side streets, there may be brief restrictions to provide time for the asphalt to cure so vehicles can safely travel over it.
- During the paving process of the eastbound lanes of Ocotillo Road from approximately Rincon Drive to Mustang Drive/140th Street, it was identified that unforeseen, extensive work is needed to the roadway structure. The project team, including the City of Chandler staff, continue to evaluate the corrective measures and costs for the needed repairs. Unfortunately, since this work is outside the scope of the original project, additional funding needs to be secured. While this project is federally funded, the recommended repairs will more than likely require local funding, which may also require approval by City Management and, ultimately, Chandler City Council.
- We recognize this is an inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as the project team works to ensure that when the improvements are complete, Ocotillo Road is a safe corridor for travel. We'll keep you posted as we have information to share, and thank you for your continued patience.
- Ocotillo Road remains open for travel during this work with traffic control in place, as needed, to shift traffic away from the work zone. Access to residences and businesses will be maintained.
