Therapeutic Recreation Programs & Special Olympics
 

It is the goal of the City of Chandler Therapeutic Recreation Program to facilitate the development, maintenance, and expression of an appropriate leisure lifestyle for individuals with physical, mental, emotional, or social limitations. We strive to meet the leisure needs of those individuals who are active in one or more of the following areas: sheltered workshop, Special Education classes, and one whose mental and/or physical disability limits that person from participating in regular recreation.

    This is a charity event to benefit Chandler Special Olympics and educational scholarships for people with disabilities. Sponsorships are available and donated items for gift bags and an auction are appreciated.
    • Tournament Goals
      • Raise money for the Chandler Special Olympics program and Chandler Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities Scholarship and Stipend Program.
      • Recruit a full tournament field of 132 golfers.
      • Encourage local corporations and businesses in the community to become Major Sponsors and help underwrite the cost of the tournament.

  • THERAPEUTIC HORSEBACK RIDING
    Learn about how to care for and ride horses in a friendly, therapeutic environment. Horses are friends to all who care for them. Each person participating must have a Special Olympics physical on file before the first night of class.

  • CREATIVE DANCE & MOVEMENT CLASS
    Dance and move, stretch and spin. This class is for all who want to learn a variety of movements and dances. We will dance with props and partners too.

  • HOLIDAY KRAFTY KRAFTS
    Come make some fun crafts for the holidays. Cut and paste, trim and tuck, it will all look nice.

& Unified Sports

**All Special Olympics and Unified Sports require 60% attendance in order to participate in state competition. Every athlete must have a current physical on file in Chandler before the first night of practice. Athletes may only participate in one of the following Cheer/Dance or Basketball for competition in March 2009 and kayaking or track & field for competition in May 2009. Competition for Floor Hockey is in February 2009 and competition for flag football will be in January 2009

  • UNIFIED FLAG FOOTBALL
    Throw, Run or pull the flags. Flag football is new to Special Olympics and a whole lot of fun. Teams will be created with non-disabled partners to learn the skills of football while preparing to compete at the state competition.

  • SPECIAL OLYMPICS FLOOR HOCKEY
    Hockey anyone? Floor hockey is played with a large round puck with a hole in the center to insert the stick and run. The season consists of practice to learn the sport, area competition in Mesa and state competition at Winter Games in Flagstaff. Come join the fun.

  • UNIFIED BASKETBALL TEAM
    Athletes and partners here we come. Unified basketball is for those athletes that can keep up with a fast pace team while focusing on the true skills of basketball through on court coaching from partners. Unified basketball participates in a traveling league in February & March.

  • SPECIAL OLYMPICS BASKETBALL SKILLS
    Chest pass, bounce pass, dribble, shoot and score. These are some of the skills you will learn to teach the basics of basketball for new athletes and those who want to learn about basketball.

    Are you familiar with basketball? Now you are ready to play on a team. This program is for Special Olympics athletes who are familiar with basketball basic skills and can run the court to play in games.

  • SPECIAL OLYMPICS CHEERLEADING TEAM
    C-H-A-N-D-L-E-R, GO CHANDLER! Come cheer for the Cougars and learn cheers for competition at area and state tournaments.

    Stretch, Kick, dance and learn a new routine. Special Olympics dance is great for coordination, movement, socialization and lots of fun.

Volunteers are needed and always welcome!

There are many ways that you can contribute to the Special Olympics sports, classes, socials, or special programs. If you are a positive role model and interested in helping out with any of the fun and inspiring programs, please call Collette Jones at (480) 782-2709. You’ll be glad you made a difference!

  • SWIM TEAM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
    Do you have swimming knowledge? Would you like to help a Special Olympics athlete? Then we want you! Volunteers are always needed so please call 480.782.2709 to volunteer or send an email to collette.prather@chandleraz.gov.
  • UNIFIED GOLF TEAM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
    Unified golf pairs a non-disabled athlete with a Special olympics athlete. Each pair will golf on the course and compete as a pair. Volunteers are always needed so please call 480-782-2709 to volunteer or send an email to
    collette.prather@chandleraz.gov.

Medical Release Form

ALL athletes competing in any Special Olympics sport must have a current Arizona State Special Olympics medical form on file with the City of Chandler BEFORE beginning practice for any sport! There is a specific form that needs to be filled out by the doctor as well as the family. It is also suggested that you keep a copy of your current physical. If you are unsure if your medical form is up to date, please give us a call at (480) 782-2709.

 Friday Night Social Club

The popular Friday Night Social Club is your opportunity to go out into the community with friends to enjoy the evening. This program is designed for teens and adults ages 16 and older with disabilities. For more information call (480) 782-2709.

 

Scholarships and Stipend Program

The City of Chandler Community Services Department offers a scholarship program to assist economically disadvantaged families and individuals with improving their quality of life through leisure and recreation opportunities. Please refer to our Break Time brochure for a complete class list and general information. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please complete this application form  in its entirety and return it to the Chandler Community Services Department along with your class registration form and financial documentation.  You must be a Chandler resident to participate in this program.

In addition, the Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities offers one-time eligible education scholarships. For an application or more information, call (480) 963-7182.

Registration Procedures

Individuals who meet the above criteria, and who are interested in joining these programs, should contact the Chandler Recreation Division in order to receive a registration form and become enrolled in the Therapeutic Program (new participants only). All participants must have a current registration form at the Chandler Community Center. All participants will automatically be put on our mailing list and will receive the monthly calendar, flyers, and other information regarding our programs.
