The flowing criterion is required for emergency, secondary and gate access to all properties in the City of Chandler:
- All projects shall have a second access located as remote as possible from the primary access to the site (they shall be placed a distance apart equal to not less than one half of the length of the maximum overall diagonal dimension of the lot or area served, measured in a straight line between accesses).
- All access shall be recorded on the Final Plat.
- Emergency access gate(s) shall meet the following Fire Department criteria:
- All gates and barriers across fire apparatus access roadways shall be set off the roadway by fifty-five feet (55’) to allow for a safe distance for the Fire Department to pull off the roadway to open the access gate or barrier. If gate swing is out or toward the roadway then the distance of the gate panel shall be included in the gate set back.
- Non-electric gates or barriers for other than primary entrances shall comply with Fire Department Detail FD109
- Conversion from manual gates to automatic gates will require a key switch and pre-emption device(s) to be installed for any gates across Fire Department access.
- Electrically operated gates installed across required fire apparatus access roadways shall be provided with a key switch and pre-emption device(s). Key switch and pre-emption device(s) are required on all electric gates or barriers limiting 24-hour access to the site. The key switch and pre-emption device(s) location shall be shown on the Site Plan.
- Gates designed to use a “key fob” system shall also install a numeric keypad in addition to a pre-emption devices and a key switch.
- All gated access driveways shall be designed in accordance with City of Chandler Detail C-228.
- Pre-emption device(s) shall remain open for 30 minutes after emergency activation (first Fire Department apparatus entering), to allow other Fire Department apparatus and/or ambulance(s) to enter the site during emergencies. (See City of Chandler Detail C-228).
- Key pads/numeric pads or other device are prohibited for exiting on electric gates unless otherwise approved by the Fire Marshal.
- Electrical plans shall show panel locations, size and type of conduit, conduit routing, conductor size, type of over current protection and location of disconnecting means.
- Key switch(s) may be obtained from the Knox Company; enter Chandler for the city code.

The Fire Department will have final approval for ALL access to ensure the best possible safety for the site.
