Landscaping and Irrigation Workshops

Each spring and fall, the Water Conservation Office offers classes designed to help residents learn how to use water more efficiently and still have a lush, beautiful looking yard.

This fall, the City of Chandler and Town of Queen Creek are partnering to offer a variety of virtual training workshops that will aid customers in cultivating landscapes that are water-wise, beautiful and low-maintenance. Each workshop is taught by an expert in their field.

Each class will be approximately 60 – 90 minutes long and will include time for Q & A’s. All workshops/classes are free of charge to Chandler utility customers, but advanced registration is required. Once registered, you will receive reminders and links to helpful handouts for each class.

Fall 2021 Virtual Landscaping and Irrigation Workshops

Come learn all about the process and benefits of turning yard waste and organic food scraps into vital nutrients for your soil. Compost reduces the need to water as often, as well as the need for commercial soil amendments and chemical fertilizers.

Whether you’re a beginner or experienced gardener just looking for tips to make your garden more productive in our desert climate, this class is for you. You’ll learn how to plan, start and maintain a vegetable garden, as well as what will grow here and when to plant.

Our southwest region is home to a multitude of wonderful herbal plants that enhance the beauty of your garden and your life.  Discover which native herbs are fun to include in your herb garden, as well as those that add exciting landscape interest and have a wide variety of uses.

Are you noticing dry areas in your lawn? Are you confused about irrigation parts like valves or controllers? Do you think a "station" is only a channel on TV? Take the mystery out of watering your landscape by learning how often, how much, and how long you should water. You’ll also see how to operate an irrigation timer.

Irrigation controllers can seem intimidating but they are actually very simple. Come learn five pieces of information that will help you create a complete watering program. Learn advanced programming of your controller to deliver the right amount of water at the right times.

Does your landscape need a makeover? Perhaps just a tune-up? This class will show you how to develop a plan for your yard and incorporate design elements. You’ll also learn about using colors, textures, and focal points to your advantage. Lawn removal/conversion will also be discussed along with rebates offered.

Drip irrigation can be very efficient because it delivers the water very slowly. That also makes identifying problems a little tricky. Learn all the different components that go into a proper drip irrigation system. Learn the most common problems of a drip irrigation system and how to fix them.

Get familiar with a wide variety of intriguing sculptural forms that can embellish your desert landscape.  These plants are drought tolerant and low maintenance, yet provide a range of color, texture, and size – who could ask for more?  Learn how to use them for maximum effect in your garden.

Keeping your sprinkler and bubbler systems in top shape will ensure you use just the right amount of water. Learn what the different components are and how they are assembled. Learn how to do simple things like replacing nozzles all the way to diagnosing and repairing irrigation valves.

Water efficiency in our landscapes is increasingly important. Can we still have beautiful landscapes in a time of extreme drought? With sensible planning of our landscapes, followed by proper all-around maintenance, we can continue to enjoy thriving outdoor spaces.

Adjusting your watering schedules more often saves water and is better for the landscape. The most accurate way is to adjust the watering each time based on the weather since the last time it watered. Learn how smart controllers do all this on their own and how to select the right controller for our region and your yard.

SRP electric customers must register and attend a tree planting workshop to be eligible for the SRP Shade Tree Program. You'll learn more about the eligible trees, and the best methods for planting and caring for the new trees. The workshops will be conducted by Trees Matter.
