CHANDLER, Ariz. – The City of Chandler is planning for needed utility rate adjustments to cover higher operating and capital costs in these utilities. The following increases are proposed: water (9%), wastewater (6.5%), reclaimed water (9%), and solid waste (4.5%). This would be an increase of about $5.73 a month for a resident using 10,000 gallons of water per month.
Operating items such as chemicals and electricity that are essential in the process of providing safe drinking water and treating wastewater continue to see higher costs, and there have been increases in contracted costs for solid waste and recycling collections and waste hauling.
Inflation continues to increase the costs for capital construction materials on water and wastewater facility improvement projects. Additionally, the planned number of projects has also increased to better address aging infrastructure such as main replacements, well construction and rehabilitation, and sewer assessments and rehabilitation, since once the infrastructure is built to support our residents, the city must maintain it to ensure safe systems.
These rate adjustments will be implemented equally across all customer classifications, including single-family, multi-family, non-residential, landscape, and industrial customer classes for water; and single-family, multi-family, and non-residential customer classes for wastewater.
The utility rates will be discussed at City Council meetings on Oct. 15 (Public Hearing and first read of the Ordinance) and Nov. 19 (Ordinance final adoption) at 6 p.m.
The proposed rate changes would take effect for bills issued on or after Jan. 4, 2027.
Residents can submit comments and review details of the utility rate changes, including a calculator to estimate specific utility bill cost impacts based on their actual usage, online at proposed utility rates.
