The City of Chandler is studying improvements to complete the southernmost segment of the Paseo Trail along the Consolidated Canal. The project would add a new paved shared-use path and safer street crossings to improve walking and biking connections in south Chandler.
This study evaluates improvements to approximately 1.2 miles of unpaved canal pathway between Riggs Road and Hunt Highway. The project would complete the final gap in Chandler’s Paseo Trail system, creating a continuous 9.2-mile north–south shared-use path for walking and biking.
Key elements being studied include:
- A new 10-foot-wide concrete shared-use path
- Safer crossings at Riggs Road and 116th Street
- Improved connectivity to neighborhoods, parks, schools, and regional trails
This segment of the trail is currently unpaved, creating a gap in the city and regional trail network and limiting safe, continuous travel for people walking and biking. The surrounding area serves a wide range of users, including families, older adults, and school-aged children who rely on comfortable and accessible routes for everyday trips and recreation. Improving this segment would help separate people walking and biking from high-speed vehicle traffic, significantly enhancing safety and comfort for all users.
Project benefits include:
- Completing a continuous regional trail corridor within the Chandler
- Safer crossings at major streets
- Better access to schools, parks, and future trailheads
- More connection to Frye Road protected bike lanes and Downtown Chandler
Project limits
- North: Riggs Road
- South: Hunt Highway
- Along the SRP Consolidated Canal and Union Pacific Railroad
The project is in the planning and preliminary study phase: 15%.
Next steps may include:
- Continued coordination with partner agencies
- Public outreach
- Identifying funding for final design and construction
The study reviewed multiple alignments and crossing alternatives to determine the safest, most feasible way to complete the trail.
Alternatives considered included:
- Different path alignments along the canal
- Multiple crossing treatments at Riggs Road and 116th Street
- Evaluation of railroad crossing constraints
Public Involvement
We want your feedback
The City of Chandler is inviting residents and trail users to share their input through an online survey. Community feedback will help inform the design of the Paseo Trail improvements, including path alignment, crossings, and safety features. The responses and feedback will be considered as the project moves forward.
