Chandler is a safe, diverse and inclusive community that connects people, chooses innovation and inspires excellence. Council is committed to fostering this type of community through several diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and has supported the creation of a DEI Division under the City Manager’s Office. The Division’s priorities include community events, education, advocacy and collaboration.
Two budget amendments were brought forth to continue to support DEI efforts. Councilmember Lopez and I co-sponsored a budget amendment for the creation of a Marketing and Special Event Coordinator who will be planning and executing diversity-related events.
Councilmembers Ellis and Harris brought forth a budget amendment for increased spending for DEI-focused events. With this increased spending, the DEI Division is hosting events for National Hispanic Heritage Month as part of the Chandler Contigo campaign that runs from Sept. 15 - Oct. 15. This month-long program consists of family and educational events and activities that honor and celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.
