The City of Chandler worked with Dig Studio to design new pickleball courts at Tumbleweed Park, providing more opportunities for residents to play this popular sport.
Since 2018, the city has constructed 10 pickleball courts within existing parks.
The 2021 Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan found that the city did not meet the national standard – one pickleball court per 12,000 people. This new facility will include 18 lighted pickleball courts and when complete, will exceed that national standard. The facility will also include restrooms, shade, ramadas, parking, site furniture and landscaping.
The new courts will be located south of Germann Road, just east of the Tumbleweed Recreation Center.
As with all park development projects, the city contacted residents for their input. A focus group of Chandler residents/pickleball players helped develop the initial plan. On August 15, 2023, a public meeting was held to receive input on the conceptual design and the residents were very supportive of the concept.
City Council approved the construction contract in September 2024. The Tumbleweed Park Pickleball Facility broke ground and construction is scheduled to begin in October 2024. The project is expected to be complete in fall 2025.
