To fit the desired theme of this contest, photographs must showcase some form of “The Natural World.” Photos should include nature, outdoors or biological components. Photos that showcase primarily man-made materials may be removed from competition at the discretion of the Environmental Education Center staff. Photographs may be color or black and white. Previously published photos may be entered; however, please include information on when and where the photos have appeared. Winning photos from other competitions may also be entered, but the name of the contest(s) and the year(s) entered must be included. Such information is informative only and will not influence voting. The EEC reserves the right to reject any photo entry.

Photo Size

It is the photographer’s responsibility to submit quality images. Photographs submitted digitally will be mounted on foam core and could be printed as large as 20 inches on the long side. Low-quality photos will be printed and judged with the others but they may be considerably smaller or pixelated which would create a disadvantage.

Image Donations

Participants retain ownership of their photos to use and grants the City of Chandler, nonexclusive license to reproduce, publish, circulate or otherwise use the photographs howsoever in any medium now in existence or to be established, in perpetuity.

Photographers may submit a total of four photographs into one or both available categories, but the same photo cannot be entered into more than one category. Photo Categories:

1. What You See is What You Get (No Alterations)

Photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. Photos that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization will be disqualified. Acceptable alterations will include adjustments to color, contrast, brightness and sharpness; removal of dust and scratches; cropping; black and white conversions; and use of HDR (high dynamic range) where multiple exposures of the same scene are combined for a greater tonal range. Not acceptable are photo composites (combination of two or more photos, not of the same scene); the addition, duplication, deletion or moving of objects in the photos; or the use of artistic digital filters and effects. Examples of artistic filters and effects are watercolor, neon glow, posturizing, stained glass, and others which do not show the scene in its natural way. Failure to comply with this rule will result in the disqualification of your photograph.

2. Digitally Enhanced (Artistic Alterations Encouraged)

This category is designed for photos that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization. In this category it is encouraged that photographers exercise creativity by altering photographs in these ways: Double exposures, photo composites, the addition, duplication, deletion or moving of objects in the photos; or the use of artistic digital filters and effects. These things are all allowed ONLY in this category. Images must have been photographs to begin with. Drawings, paintings, clipart, digital renderings, or animated characters are NOT photos and will be disqualified.

Photographs will be judged only by the public visiting the Environmental Education Center. A ballot box will be used to collect votes and each visitor is only allowed to vote once. Voting begins at 8 a.m. on Feb. 15 and will end at 3 p.m. on March 14.

Each category will showcase a First, Second, and Third place award. Other photographs that miss the podium by a small margin will receive an honorable mention and be displayed online with the winners. Winners will be announced on March 20.

The first-place winner of each category will receive a $100 gift card to Best Buy.*
