The expansion of Tumbleweed Recreation Center marks a new chapter for wellness and recreation in Chandler. Since opening its doors nearly 15 years ago, Tumbleweed Recreation Center has been a hub for recreation and fitness in Chandler. A place that builds community and inspires all to discover, imagine, and grow.
The storied space has plans to expand in January 2024 to meet the growing needs of the community. Chandler Recreation has partnered with leading architecture firm, BRS Architects to review, verify, and update the facility space plan and needs of the community.
This project will expand the existing facility by approximately 11,000 square feet, adding programming space that will be located on the east side of the building. The expansion will include two classrooms, two patios with shade structures, a fitness room, game area, restrooms, a multipurpose room, lobby, reception area with a separate entrance from the existing Tumbleweed Recreation Center, and updated landscaping.
As required by city ordinance, this expansion will also have a public art element, which was planned as part of the overall project and recommended by the city's Arts Commission. The art project will include a walkway with arches leading into the building’s expansion.

Project Timeline
Chandler Recreation and the project architects have hosted four visioning sessions with recreation facilities' members and participants, staff, and other community stakeholders to solicit ideas and feedback about the Tumbleweed Recreation Center Expansion Project.
In advance of the visioning sessions, project architects reviewed the extensive public and professional advice on the growing needs of the community and improvement opportunities for the facility that Chandler Recreation has collected over the past four years.
The Mayor and City councilmembers joined the Chasse Construction group to officially break ground for the Tumbleweed Rec Center Expansion project. The groundbreaking celebrated the beginning of construction.
The Tree House is moving to a new location during construction, which should be complete by the end of May. The new Tree House area will have interactive activities to keep kids busy and entertained while their adults participate in fitness activities.
Demolition to make room for the new addition. Once demolition is complete, the new foundation will be laid during April and May.
This is when the magic happens and the expansion really comes together. Interior walls will receive finishing touches, flooring will be laid, and plumbing and electricity will be in place.
