CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Gallery at Chandler Center for the Arts’ new exhibition, “(Be) Longing,” explores cultural identity, nostalgia and belonging through the eyes of four Japanese American artists. This show will be on display at the Gallery at Chandler Center for the Arts through April 18.

“(Be) Longing” features four Japanese-born artists who immigrated to the United States and now call Arizona home. From resin to clay to paint, they attempt to reconcile their two identities through art. Their works are modern, yet deeply rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics, drawing inspiration from folklore, religious rituals, Zen philosophy and historical art forms like Fusuma-e and Mingei craft.

Artist Kaori Takamura, who initially envisioned the exhibition, said, “We started planning this show more than two years ago and finally brought it to fruition. Because of a unique blend of the four different individual artists, the exhibition has an exciting storytelling aspect, which is extraordinary.”

The featured artists are Kazuma Sambe, Kaori Takamura, Hirotsune Tashima and Yuko Yabuki. Join the artists for the opening reception of the exhibition on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 5-7 p.m. RSVP online.

The Gallery at Chandler Center for the Arts is located at 250 N. Arizona Ave. Hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday noon-4 p.m.; Closed Sunday. Free admission.
