CHANDLER, Ariz. – The City of Chandler is proud to announce the completion of a major expansion of the Tumbleweed Recreation Center (TRC), adding 11,000 square feet of new space designed to enhance community engagement and support multi-generational programming.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 9 a.m. to celebrate the expansion, followed by an open house until noon. Residents are invited to explore the new facility, participate in fitness demonstrations, visit vendor tables, enjoy hands-on activities and enter raffles for fun giveaways.

“This incredible new addition creates a dedicated space for building connections, especially among our active adult residents,” said Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke. “As demand grows for adult-focused programming, we’re proud to offer an inviting environment that fosters wellness, creativity, and connection.”

Located on the east side of the existing facility, the new addition features a fitness room, craft studio, a dividable classroom, events hall, game area, restrooms, lobby and reception area, two shaded patios, and a separate entrance from the existing TRC. The entrance includes a new public art shade canopy.

The new space will be home to the Saguaro Social Club, a dedicated time for those 55 years and older to enjoy exclusive access and programs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Outside the Saguaro Social Club hours, the space will be open for registered programming.

“Throughout this entire process, we’ve been guided by the needs and aspirations of current and future community members,” said Community Services Director John Sefton. “While this new space is especially important for our active adult population, it’s also designed to serve and engage residents of all ages. The programs and events offered here will evolve to meet the changing interests of our community, and we’re excited to continue enriching lives through these meaningful experiences.”

The Tumbleweed Recreation Center is located at 745 E. Germann Road in Chandler. For more information about the TRC expansion and upcoming programs, visit the Tumbleweed Recreation Center

Background on this project:

The TRC was originally constructed in 2008 as a 62,000 square-foot recreational facility that provides a variety of classes and activities for all ages. The existing TRC features an art studio, catering and teaching kitchen, ceramics studio, child watch, classrooms, dance studio, fitness areas, group exercise studio, gymnasium, indoor track, locker room with showers, meeting room, multipurpose room, and racquetball courts.

Construction of the TRC expansion began in January 2024 through a contract awarded to Chasse Building Team. The facility was designed by Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture. The need for a multigenerational facility in Chandler was identified through previous assessments of recreational spaces and options to meet the community’s need for adult programs.
