Jacaranda Parkway Protected Bike Lanes

The City of Chandler is designing low-cost, quick-build protected bike lane improvements to add physical separation between people biking and vehicle traffic along key segments of Jacaranda Parkway.

By physically separating travel modes the project is expected to reduce conflicts, improve visibility, and create a safer, more comfortable corridor for people driving, biking, and walking. These changes will help improve access to nearby neighborhoods, schools, and destinations while supporting safer travel for users of all ages and abilities.

Project Overview

During the city’s 2019 Transportation Master Plan update, residents shared that they want to bike as a form of transportation, but many are not comfortable riding in unprotected bike lanes next to vehicular traffic. Jacaranda Parkway is one of Chandler’s most promising corridors for protected bike lanes. Identified in the city’s Protected Bike Lane Feasibility Study, the corridor’s existing width and buffered bike lanes allow for quick-build improvements that add physical separation between people biking and vehicle traffic.

This project focuses on adding protection using quick-build elements, such as posts/bollards and precast curbs, along a looped corridor where bike lanes already exist in many locations, making it a strong and cost-effective candidate for improving safety, comfort, and accessibility for people of all ages and abilities.

Project Limits

Jacaranda Parkway, between Dobson Road, Alma School Road, Ocotillo Road, and Queen Creek Road. Portions of Market Place, Edgewater Way, and Ocotillo Road will be considered to connect the two portions of Jacaranda Parkway to complete the loop.

Bike lane conditions along Jacaranda Parkway already include buffered bike lanes that were requested by residents. At Edgewater Way, Market Place, and Ocotillo Road only minimal separation from vehicle traffic is present. This project focuses on practical, maintainable improvements that build on existing conditions and the experience the city acquired from designing and building the Frye Road Protected Bike Lane Project to create a safer and more comfortable experience for people biking.

Proposed improvements include adding physical separation between bike lanes and vehicle lanes using quick-build elements such as vertical posts/bollards and curbs, along with targeted pavement marking enhancements. Wayfinding signage will be used to help people biking navigate the corridor where conditions shift, and some segments may remain unchanged due to existing constraints, with clear guidance directing users back to the protected route.
