Learn more about the Chandler Heights Road Improvement Project, Gilbert Road to Val Vista Drive.
(Project Nos. ST1614.401 / CHN0240D / T009901C)
The City of Chandler has contracted with Granite Construction and Ardurra Group for construction which began in August to widen Chandler Heights Road to a minimum of four lanes (two lanes in each direction), from McQueen to Gilbert Road. Improvements include construction of raised medians, bike lanes, center turn lanes, sidewalks, curb/gutter, landscaping, and utility relocations.
The project also includes drainage improvements such as retention basins and concrete scuppers to accommodate future drainage needs in the project area. In addition, there will be improvements to traffic signals and the traffic signal interconnect, as well as new LED street lighting and conversion of overhead electric to underground.
Construction began in fall 2022 and is expected to take approximately 18 months to complete.
Construction Information (March 20, 2023):
Crews continue work to install storm drain on the south side of Chandler Heights Road, from the RWCD Canal to Gilbert Road.
Crews also continue work on water and sewer extensions, relocations, and abandonments to accommodate the road improvements and also working to install manholes throughout the project area.
Scheduled to begin this week, concrete crews will work at the Bashas’ Plaza western-most driveway on Chandler Heights to pour and replace the ADA ramps and valley gutters. To accommodate this work, this driveway will be closed and scheduled to be re-opened by end of day Friday. Alternate access is available at the other Chandler Heights Road driveways and on Gilbert Road.
Scheduled to begin the week of March 27, crews will work on removing and replacing concrete valley gutters across side streets on the north side of Chandler Heights Road. This work will take approximately one week per location and access will be maintained during this work with a flagger in place, as needed to assist travelers around the work zone. This valley gutter work will begin at Lindl Drive and then move west to 132nd Place, 132nd Street, 130th Street, and Salt Cedar Street.
Crews have also been working to prepare for and pour wall footings on the north side of Chandler Heights, between 130th and 132nd Street, and recently began installing the masonry walls.
Electric crews continue work installing streetlight conduit from Cooper to Gilbert Road, and electric conduit for SRP from Cooper Road to Adams Avenue.
Crews have also begun installing drainage structures such as scuppers, spillways and catch basins from 130th Street to Lindl Drive on both sides of Chandler Heights Road.
Chandler Heights Road remains open for travel during this work with traffic shifted away from the work activity permitting at least one lane of traffic in each direction.
Access to residences and businesses will be maintained.
