Digital Content/Media Intern

Communications and Public Affairs
The primary function of an intern is to provide trainee-level assistance to Communications and Public Affairs (CAPA) in the production of digital content. The work is reserved for upper-division students and/or recent graduates. 

This internship provides a great opportunity to gain practical work experience in public affairs, communications, social media, graphic design, multimedia and community outreach. Interns will provide various support functions that will help increase the city's online presence and resident engagement through the city's social media channels. 

Position Hours
15-20 hours per week

Essential Functions

  • Assist in the creation, organization and implementation of social media content, including post messages and accompanying visuals: photos, graphics, videos, etc. 
  • Write copy as needed for blog posts and social media captions
  • Assist in the day-to-day social listening and curation of user-generated content across social media platforms 
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to ideate and implement actionable, measurable cross-platform social strategies to meet audience development goals including growth, engagement, and brand awareness 
  • Take photographs at events, meetings and locations in the community 
    • Log and file digital pictures and/or footage 
  • Track, analyze, and report on social performance on an ongoing basis 
  • Work with the marketing team to plan and execute social calendars for social channels with consideration of seasonality, and real-time trends 
  • Create graphics, animations and videos using third-party tools 
  • Communicate and coordinate regularly with others 
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with city policies and procedures 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of branding; the ability to work with brand standards/guidelines
  • Highly interested in social media, technology and digital trends
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Proficient in social media platforms, best practices and emerging trends
  • Knowledge of Visme (similar to Canva), Vyond, Typito, Adobe Creative Suite a plus
  • Ability to write, plan and schedule social media content
  • Able to work independently and complete tasks in a timely manner

The work is performed under the direct supervision of an assigned supervisor or lead worker.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; and
  • Enrolled in vocational school, community college or college or university with an interest in communications, marketing, journalism and/or public relations; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.  

Work Environment
The primary duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.
