Outdoor water savings
With the change in seasons and cooler weather approaching, it’s an ideal time to reassess your landscape watering practices. About 60% of residential water use occurs outdoors, and nearly 50% of landscapes are overwatered.
Overwatering can lead to problems including excessive plant growth, root diseases, and increased landscape maintenance. Instead, practice deep, infrequent watering to encourage robust root systems that can better withstand heat and drought. By modifying your watering practices, you can help conserve Chandler’s water resources and maintain a healthy landscape.
To water plants effectively, focus on root depth by applying water deeply and infrequently. Apply water at a slow rate to allow it to fully percolate into the soil instead of running off. Ensure the water reaches a depth of 6-12 inches depending on the plant’s size, which can be checked using a soil probe. Water less frequently, such as every week or every 10-14 days, and adjust the controller based on weather conditions to promote deeper root growth. Increase watering frequency during hot, dry spells and reduce it in cooler or rainy weather to support healthier roots and better drought resistance.
Regularly check and maintain your irrigation system, including sprinklers and drip, to optimize its efficiency. Adjust sprinkler heads to ensure they only cover the intended areas. Additionally, set your timers and controllers to match seasonal demands and adjust them based on current weather conditions and plant requirements.
Chandler offers $2 per sq. ft. for converting grass to xeriscape and a smart irrigation controller rebate that reimburses 50% of the cost for the controller and attachments that improve its accuracy, including on-site weather stations and soil moisture sensors. Smart controllers adjust watering schedules daily based on weather conditions and are programmed with user-friendly app, making them easier to manage
compared to manual controllers.
