CHANDLER, Ariz. – Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) awarded a $50,000 grant to the City of Chandler’s Community Services Department to create the Chandler Native Plant Oasis at Veterans Oasis Park, located on the northeast corner of Chandler Heights and Lindsay roads.

The proposed project focuses the park’s existing community education garden into a native plant education center, enabling community members to learn more about native plants and their importance in a changing desert environment.

The Native Plant Oasis will be used in Chandler Nature Center programming to present topics like invasive plant species, water conservation, ethnobotany and desert ecology. Submitted to the GRIC in March, the goal of the program is to connect the community with the natural environment through educational programming and volunteer opportunities.
