Update regarding the ongoing incident at the battery storage facility located within the Salt River Project (SRP) substation near 54th Street and Pecos Road in Chandler.  

The Chandler Fire Department has concluded its operations at the battery storage facility and the recommended evacuation has ended. Chandler Fire will continue to work with the business involved to monitor the facility over the weekend. The facility and air quality in the immediate area around the building continue to be monitored.   

Traffic Update: 56th Street has reopened between Frye and Allison roads.

Update regarding the hazardous materials incident at a battery storage facility located within the Salt River Project (SRP) substation near 54th Street and Pecos Road in Chandler, Ariz.

The Chandler Fire Department is working with the business involved to take measures today (April 29) to ventilate the building and cease ongoing use of its fire suppression system. As a precaution, businesses within roughly a quarter-mile area are being notified of the recommendation to evacuate by 12:30 p.m. today for the duration of this operation.

Businesses also are advised to take preventative measures that reduce outside air from infiltrating the interior of buildings as a precaution in the event of a chemical release. 

Chandler Police will visit businesses in the recommended evacuation area starting at 11 a.m. today to ensure they are aware of this recommendation.

Traffic Impact: 56th Street will be closed between Frye and Allison roads starting at 12:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

The facility and air quality in the immediate area around the building continue to be monitored. No exposures to nearby businesses have been detected to this point.

The Chandler Fire Department is working with the business involved to take measures Friday (April 29) to ventilate the building and cease ongoing use of its fire suppression system. As a precaution, businesses within roughly a quarter-mile area are being notified of the recommendation to evacuate by 12:30 p.m. Friday for the duration of this operation.

Chandler Fire will have crews on site working with the businesses involved to continue ventilating the building and gathering more information as it relates to this incident.

Update regarding the hazardous materials incident at a battery storage facility located within the Salt River Project (SRP) substation near 54th Street and Pecos Road in Chandler.

The Chandler Fire and Police departments were successful in the efforts tonight in reducing the hazard potential at the site. Fire crews remain on scene and continue to work with the businesses involved to address the issues within the battery storage facility site.  

The recommended evacuation, shelter in place and road closures in the area are being lifted at 9 p.m. tonight. Businesses can resume operations as soon as tonight and continue working on site tomorrow. This remains an active scene so we’ll use this webpage to notify you if conditions change and warrant additional precautions to be taken.

The Chandler Fire Department is working with the businesses involved and SRP to take measures this evening to reduce the hazard potential at the site.

Chandler Police will begin making in-person notifications to businesses that are within the evacuation area starting at 4 p.m. today. It is highly recommended that notified businesses evacuate the area as a precaution before 6 p.m. tonight. Please see map of evacuation area outlined below.

Those individuals who choose to remain in the evacuation area will be required to shelter in place until tonight’s measures have concluded, which could extend several hours into the evening and potentially overnight.

Please note: 56th Street will be closed between Frye and Allison roads and the I-10 ramps to eastbound Loop 202 will be closed by 6 p.m. tonight.
