September is Emergency Preparedness Month — what’s in your emergency kit?
September is Emergency Preparedness Month. Chandler’s Fire Department recommends that every household should be equipped with an emergency supply kit in their home to provide for the family’s basic needs for at least three days.
The emergency kit should contain items that will help the family in the event of a power outage, suspension of water service and the inability to access supermarkets or other local services. Emergencies can happen anywhere at any time, so it is recommended to also keep a small emergency kit in every vehicle. Some of the suggested items to include:
- Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation)
- Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food)
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
- Flashlight
- First aid kit
- Extra batteries
- Whistle (to signal for help)
- Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
- Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
- Manual can opener (for food)
- Local maps
- Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

Did you know these wallet-sized passes can be used for more than just borrowing books? Your CPL library card can give you access to all sorts of unexpected perks—and most of them are completely free!
1. E-books — With a library card linked to apps like
cloudLibrary, you can borrow and download countless e-books, audiobooks and more.
2. Magazines and Newspapers — Apps like PressReader and Flipster are amazing resources for staying up to date on the
latest news and entertainment.
3. Movies and Music — Cardholders can stream thousands of movies on platforms like Kanopy or music using Freegal. Fans of traditional format movies and music can still check out DVDs and CDs.
4. Arizona Attractions Passes — Use your library card to check out a Culture Pass to gain free admission to dozens of cultural institutions.
5. Learn A Language — With a library card you can access over 70 different languages through Mango Languages or even attend an English learning class.
6. Learn New Career Skills — No matter your profession, it’s never too late to improve existing skills or gain new ones with learning platforms like LinkedIn Learning.
7. Be a Creator — The future of making is here, and it’s yours to create in the Library’s makerspace.

Jam to live music all fall with the return of the Sonoran Sunset concert series
This fall, residents and visitors to Chandler can enjoy six live musical performances as part of the Sonoran Sunset Series, a run of free open-air concerts.
On the third Thursday of the month, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., talented musicians and entertainers will perform an array of acts for music lovers at Veterans Oasis Park’s spacious amphitheater. From Oct. 19 through Mar. 21, jazz, country, feel-good rock, and even the sweet sounds of multiple eras take to the park’s main stage.
Trash and recycling reminders
· Trash and recycling is collected anytime from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Though it may seem the truck arrives about the same time every week, there is no specific scheduled time for trash or recycling containers to be emptied.
- Time of collection varies due to truck load capacity, traffic, weather, route changes, road construction and street or utility maintenance.
- To ensure collection service is not interrupted, have your can at the curb by 6 a.m. on your day of collection or after 6 p.m. the evening before your collection day.
- If you placed your can out by 6 a.m., but your container was missed, leave your can at the curb and call 480-782-3510 no later than the next business day.
- Reports of missed collection are verified by container inspections on a street, and by review of GPS reports that track a collection truck route.
· Containers must be against the curb or in front of a residence and should be placed at least three feet from other containers and at least six feet away from parked cars, light poles, mailboxes or other objects.
· Garbage and grass must be bagged and tied in trash cans. Recyclables should not be placed in bags.
· Lids should be closed on cans with no protruding items.
· Containers must be removed from the curb by 9 a.m. on the day following collection.
· Containers must be secured at the residence between collection days in such a manner that they are not readily susceptible to theft or vandalism.
· Residents are responsible for keeping trash and recycling containers clean.
· Broken, cracked or damaged recycling and trash containers should be reported to Solid Waste Services at 480-782-3510 for repair or replacement.

efficient landscape.
