The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Section 8 Rental Assistance and Public Housing Waiting List is CLOSED for Applications.
There are eligibility requirements to qualify for Public Housing, Section 8 or other affordable rental housing. Some of the main criteria are:
- Qualifies as an individual, family, elderly or disabled person;
- Income that does not exceed the annual posted income limits;
- Meets citizenship/eligible immigrant criteria;
- Provides required documentation, including Social Security Numbers;
- Signs consent authorization.

- Pass tenancy history review (not applicable to Section 8 applicants)
- Pass credit history review (not applicable to Section 8 or Public Housing applicants)
- In addition, families must meet other eligibility and screening criteria.

The City of Chandler Housing and Redevelopment Division (CHRD) is located at 235 S. Arizona Ave. in Downtown Chandler. It is south of Chandler Boulevard and just north of Frye Road.
The City of Chandler Housing and Redevelopment Division Offices are open on Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Public Housing is properties that the City of Chandler Housing and Redevelopment Division own. They consist of apartments or houses with affordable rents within the City of Chandler. Housing Choice Voucher Section 8 is a program where the participant’s rent is subsidized by the City of Chandler Housing and Redevelopment Division with HUD funds. They choose where they want to live from privately owned properties within the City of Chandler. Participants of both programs pay 30 percent of their income towards their rent.
You must live within the City of Chandler boundaries in order to receive assistance from the City of Chandler Housing Division. Yes, as long as you applied for both when both programs were open. If the waiting list for a program is closed you must wait until it opens and apply at that time. You may also be on the waiting list for one program while receiving assistance on another.
You will be notified by mail regarding your status. When your name comes near the top of the list you will be sent a prescreening letter requesting that you provide the necessary documentation to determine your eligibility. It is imperative that you keep your address current with the Housing Division. If you are mailed something and you do not respond or it is returned, you will be removed from the waiting list and you will need to reapply.
The wait on each list varies, and it is impossible to give an amount of time. It is best that you ask this question at the time you complete your application so we can try to give you an estimated answer based on where your application or name is on the waiting list.
Any changes in status must be reported to your housing specialist. Fill out a Change Report Form provided by CHRD, or mail to the CHRD. You can also pick up a Change Report form at the CHRD.
No, we do not. Emergency housing for homeless men or women is available through various shelters in the area. We recommend that individuals call the Shelter Hotline at 800-799-7739 for assistance.
You may download an application or pick up an application for the Public Housing waiting list at the City of Chandler Housing and Redevelopment Division, 235 Arizona Avenue between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday - Friday. Under extenuating circumstances if you are unable to pick up an application, one can be mailed to you, either by contacting us by phone or email.
Each multi-family apartment complex has it’s own on site recreation center where a variety of ongoing activities are available for youth ages 6-18.

Yes, one common household pet, except fish, will be permitted. A common household pet means a domesticated animal, such as a cat, dog, fish or bird that are traditionally kept in the home for pleasure rather than commercial purposes. A hamster, gerbil or turtle is also permitted. The size of the aquarium for fish or a turtle may not exceed 10 gallons. Animals that are considered exotic, like ferrets, are not permitted.
All resident dog or cat owners are responsible for a $150 non-refundable pet sanitation fee and a refundable $100 pet deposit. This is a separate deposit in addition to your security deposit. All sites accept service and companion animals. All resident pet owners (except Kingston Arms and Persons with Disabilities) are required to pay a nonrefundable pet fee of $10 a month. The feeding or harboring of any stray animal is prohibited at, in or upon any portion of any public housing facility of the City of Chandler.
All complaints must be in writing. You can fill out the Complaint Form provided by CHRD, or write a letter stating your concerns and the name and/or address of the person(s) involved.
The City of Chandler Housing and Redevelopment Division does not keep units open for viewing. Our maintenance staff works hard to renovate units as quickly as possible so that we may call the next person on our list. Once you apply and your name comes to the top of the list, you will be contacted for a specific unit. At that time, you may schedule an appointment to view the unit.
