Downtown Chandler Improvements – Dr. A.J. Chandler Park Renovation (CA2402.401)
The City of Chandler began construction in early 2026 for the Dr. A.J. Chandler Park Renovation project. Home to many of the city’s special events and festivals, the park was last renovated in 1986, and Downtown Chandler has changed significantly since that time. With the addition of multi-family housing, office space, and new retailers and restaurants, the park has also seen an increase in special events and entertainment, now with more than 100 events a year.
The City of Chandler has contracted with Willmeng for improvements to Dr. A.J. Chandler Park, on both sides of Arizona Avenue, between Buffalo and Boston streets.
- Crews continue work through April 24, during daytime hours, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., to install underground utilities in Arizona Place between Buffalo and Commonwealth, with a flagger in place to assist travelers, and the road restored to two-way traffic during off-work hours. Parking is not permitted near the work zone, with No Parking signs in place.
- Crews also continue work on the east side of Arizona Avenue to install a catch basin with the northbound bike lane closed 24/7, and the curb travel lane closed during daytime hours through Friday, May 1.
- Scheduled for April 27, masonry work will begin on the park sites with crews installing stem walls and concrete pads for restrooms and canopies.
- Scheduled to take place May 11 - 15, crews will conduct curb work on the west side of Arizona Avenue with the southbound curb lane and bike lane closed for this work. The southbound bike lane will be closed 24/7; however, the vehicular travel lane will be closed during daytime work hours only.
- Scheduled to take place May 13 - 19, crews will conduct similar curb work on the east side of Arizona Avenue with the northbound curb lane and bike lane closed for this work. The northbound bike lane will be closed 24/7; however, the vehicular travel lane will be closed during daytime work hours only.
- Scheduled to take place May 20 - 22, crews will need to work along the median island in Arizona Avenue with traffic reduced to one lane north and southbound, shifted to the outside curb lanes.
- Crews also continue work within the park sites on both sides of Arizona Avenue to install underground utilities such as water, sewer, and electrical to serve the future park landscape and structures.
During construction, parking along Arizona Avenue is limited and a few angled parking spaces along San Marcos and Arizona Place are not available; however, parking structures and surface street parking continue to offer parking throughout the downtown.
Park improvements on the west side of Arizona Avenue are expected to be complete prior to the 2026 holiday season, and on the east side of Arizona Avenue by early spring 2027.
