Downtown Chandler Improvements – Dr. A.J. Chandler Park Renovation (CA2402.401)
The City of Chandler began construction in early 2026 for the Dr. A.J. Chandler Park Renovation project. Home to many of the city’s special events and festivals, the park was last renovated in 1986, and Downtown Chandler has changed significantly since that time. With the addition of multi-family housing, office space, and new retailers and restaurants, the park has also seen an increase in special events and entertainment, now with more than 100 events a year.
The City of Chandler has contracted with Willmeng for improvements to Dr. A.J. Chandler Park, on both sides of Arizona Avenue, between Buffalo and Boston streets.
West Side of Arizona Avenue:
- Scheduled to begin the week of July 6, masonry crews will build the masonry walls for the restroom building, which will take approximately 1-2 weeks to complete. Following that work, in late July, crews will erect the structural steel, framing and decking for the restroom building. Scheduled for early August, roofing will be installed.
- Scheduled to begin the week of July 20, masonry crews will build the masonry walls for the south canopy and in early August install the interior finish and exterior metal.
- Scheduled for early August, crews will install the steel trusses for the west canopy structure.
- Concrete crews are currently working to install sidewalk area on the north side of the park, and concrete curb will follow on the north and south side within the park site.
- Underground electric installation is complete on the west side of Arizona Avenue, and once scheduled, APS crews can begin their work to pull wire.
- Landscape crews have completed pouring of the tree pits along Arizona Avenue, and are working to install structural soils and irrigation to serve future landscaping in the park site on the west side of Arizona Avenue.
East Side of Arizona Avenue:
- Crews have recently completed the pier columns on the east side of Arizona Avenue to support the shade canopies, and are scheduled to pour the concrete foundation for the north canopy the week of July 6. Scheduled to begin in early August, masonry crews will build the masonry walls for the north canopy.
- Scheduled to begin the week of July 6, electric crews will work to install underground electric to serve the park on the east side of Arizona Avenue.
- Scheduled to begin in mid-July, concrete crews will install concrete curb and, following that work, sidewalk on the north side of the site.
- Landscape crews continue work installing irrigation to serve future landscaping in the park site on the east side of Arizona Avenue.
During construction, parking along Arizona Avenue is limited and a few angled parking spaces along San Marcos and Arizona Place are not available; however, parking structures and surface street parking continue to offer parking throughout the downtown.
Park improvements on the west side of Arizona Avenue are expected to be complete prior to the 2026 holiday season, and on the east side of Arizona Avenue by early spring 2027.
