Downtown Chandler Improvements – Dr. A.J. Chandler Park Renovation (CA2402.401) & California Half-Street Improvements (CA2501.401)
The City of Chandler began construction in early 2026 for the Dr. A.J. Chandler Park Renovation project. Home to many of the city’s special events and festivals, the park was last renovated in 1986, and Downtown Chandler has changed significantly since that time. With the addition of multi-family housing, office space, and new retailers and restaurants, the park has also seen an increase in special events and entertainment, now with more than 100 events a year.
The City of Chandler has contracted with Willmeng for improvements to Dr. A.J. Chandler Park, on both sides of Arizona Avenue, between Buffalo and Boston streets.
Crews are working on either side of Arizona Avenue to install the HAWK pedestrian crossing system with crews scheduled to work on the west side of Arizona Avenue to install electric beginning Sept. 17 and following that, building pole foundations on the west side the week of Oct. 1. Crews will work on the east side of Arizona Avenue to install electric beginning Oct. 1.
West Side of Arizona Avenue:
- Crews continue installation of electric conduit to provide power for the west side.
- Work continues to install roof coating and sub framing for the west canopy with lighting installation scheduled to take place beginning Oct. 9.
- Work also continues with installation of structural steel for the south canopy. Following that, crews will install the metal decking, exterior metals and roofing into early October.
- Scheduled to begin the week of Sept. 28, crews will install louvers on the restroom building and painting is scheduled to take place the week of Oct. 5.
- Work also continues on the west side of Arizona Avenue to install concrete curb and sidewalk, with paver installation at the plaza scheduled to begin the week of Sept. 23.
- Landscape crews continue work to install structural soils to serve future landscaping in the park site on the west side of Arizona Avenue. Scheduled to begin the week of Oct. 5, installation of shrubs, drainage rock, and irrigation laterals will take place.
East Side of Arizona Avenue:
- Crews are currently working to install the soil cell system to serve future landscape.
- Scheduled to begin the week of Oct. 5, concrete crews will install sidewalk in the north area of the park site.
During construction, parking along Arizona Avenue is limited and a few angled parking spaces along San Marcos and Arizona Place are not available; however, parking structures and surface street parking continue to offer parking throughout the downtown.
Park improvements on the west side of Arizona Avenue are expected to be complete prior to the 2026 holiday season, and on the east side of Arizona Avenue by early spring 2027.

California Half-Street Improvements, Boston Street to Commonwealth Avenue (CA2501.401)
The City of Chandler has contracted with Achen-Gardner Construction to construct improvements to the east side of California Street, between Boston Street and Commonwealth Avenue. Work is nearing completion with landscape restoration currently in progress.
