Downtown Chandler Improvements Projects (ST2203.101)
The City of Chandler is currently in construction for three important projects for improvements to Downtown Chandler.
- Wall Street Improvements
- Boston Street Reconstruction
- Chandler City Hall Parking Lot & Alley Improvements
Work is taking place in the summer/fall 2024 timeframe to be complete prior to Downtown Chandler’s peak season.
The following information is provided related to project components and schedule for each of the three projects.
The City of Chandler recently completed design for aesthetic and pedestrian improvements along Wall Street between Chicago Street and Frye Road. As part of the ongoing revitalization south of the Historic Square, Wall Street Improvements (from Chicago Street to Frye Road) will improve and increase pedestrian spaces in Downtown Chandler. Renderings of the planned improvements are provided below.
Crews are scheduled to pave back Phase 1 on Monday, July 29, and beginning Tuesday, July 30, work will shift to Phase 2 (north half of Wall Street). Crews will work in the north half of Wall Street to conduct removals and reconstruct this area. Following this work, crews will install final signage, planters, irrigation, and lighting.
Access is being maintained from Arizona Avenue to the parking area, and pedestrian access to Wall Street will be maintained during construction. Work is taking place during daytime hours, weekdays, excluding major holidays, and accommodations made for sanitation and deliveries. Work areas will be secured to provide pedestrian access during off-work hours and weekends.

The City of Chandler has contracted with Sunland Asphalt to construct improvements to Boston Street, between San Marcos Place and California Street. Improvements include full asphalt and subsurface removal and replacement as well as widening sidewalks on the north side of Boston, east of Oregon Street, and on the south side of Boston, west of Oregon Street, with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and pedestrian crosswalk improvements, and a ride share/drop off area. Construction began in early May and is expected to be complete in October 2024.
Crews for the Boston Street Reconstruction Project are nearing completion with Boston Street currently closed to vehicular traffic from California to San Marcos.
Boston Street was scheduled to be reopened August 15; however, crews need to remove and restripe the roadway and parking with the following schedule to complete the improvements. Scheduled for Thursday, August 15, crews will remove existing striping in various locations and on Friday morning, August 16, crews will restripe parking and ride share bays.
As the reapplied striping requires time to cure to provide quality results, project team members will be monitoring the striping application to be able to remove existing traffic control as expediently as possible. It is expected that traffic control will be removed, and Boston Street reopened, at the earliest by end of day Friday, August 16, but if the striping has not cured adequately, it may be Saturday morning, August 17, or at the latest Monday morning, August 19. The thought is that we don’t want to have to come back at a later date and have to rework this area with another closure, so we want to make sure the striping is applied and cured per the industry standards and also meets Chandler’s requirement for application.
Detour signage is in place to direct travelers around the closure, and pedestrian access is being maintained during this time. Staff, patrons, and deliveries accessing the Oregon Street Parking garage may do so from the south, and those accessing the alley west of San Marcos Place may do so from the north.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to complete this project for Downtown Chandler.
Chandler City Hall Parking lot will be removed and repaved with new striping and added lighting. In addition, the “alley” to the south of the Boston Street businesses (north of the City Hall parking lot) will be reconstructed and include installation of concrete curbing, valley gutter, trash enclosure and electric vehicle charging stations.
Crews are currently working to complete reconstruction of the City Hall parking area, with paving scheduled for Friday, July 26, and striping of the parking lot scheduled for Friday, August 2. The City Hall parking area will remain closed until striping is complete.
Scheduled for Thursday, July 25, fence will be set-up, but the gates and access remaining open, for the Boston Street alley, limited to the alley area from Serrano’s to Washington Street. Scheduled for Monday, July 29, this area will be closed for the contractor to begin removals and the reconstruction of this area. Access will be maintained from Arizona Avenue during this time. Access will be provided, for deliveries only, to the alley just south of Boston Street until work begins in that area. Project completion is expected in October 2024.
