Downtown Chandler Improvements – Dr. A.J. Chandler Park Renovation (CA2402.401) & California Half-Street Improvements (CA2501.401)
The City of Chandler began construction in early 2026 for the Dr. A.J. Chandler Park Renovation project. Home to many of the city’s special events and festivals, the park was last renovated in 1986, and Downtown Chandler has changed significantly since that time. With the addition of multi-family housing, office space, and new retailers and restaurants, the park has also seen an increase in special events and entertainment, now with more than 100 events a year.
The City of Chandler has contracted with Willmeng for improvements to Dr. A.J. Chandler Park, on both sides of Arizona Avenue, between Buffalo and Boston streets. Provided below is information on current and upcoming construction:
West Side of Arizona Avenue:
- Crews continue installation of electric conduit to provide power for the west side.
- Work continues on the west canopy to install the roof coating, and following this work will install lighting and paint the structure into late October/early November.
- Work also continues on the south canopy as crews work on interior finishes, and tongue and groove wood into early November. The exterior metal louvers are scheduled for installation in late October.
- Crews are currently installing tongue and groove in the west restroom, and will begin painting of the building in late October, with this effort taking place into early November.
- Sidewalk installation continues in the north and south areas of the park, with some work taking place after electric installation is complete. Paver installation at the plaza continues with the HAWK crossing sidewalk pavers scheduled for the week of Oct. 19 and pavers in the south area following that work.
- Landscape crews continue work with installation of structural soils, amended soil in planting areas and irrigation laterals beginning in late October into early to mid-November.
East Side of Arizona Avenue:
- Crews are currently working on the east side of Arizona Avenue to install electric infrastructure to serve the park on the east side of Arizona Avenue. To accommodate this work, the northbound curb lane on Arizona Avenue, adjacent to the park site, is restricted during daytime hours, weekdays, for approximately two weeks.
- Crews continue work in the east side of Arizona Avenue to complete installation of the remaining steel trusses for the east canopy into early November.
- Concrete crews continue intermittent work to install sidewalk in the north area of the park site.
During construction, parking along Arizona Avenue is limited and a few angled parking spaces along San Marcos and Arizona Place are not available; however, parking structures and surface street parking continue to offer parking throughout the downtown.
Park improvements on the west side of Arizona Avenue are expected to be complete prior to the 2026 holiday season, and on the east side of Arizona Avenue by early spring 2027.
