Downtown Chandler Improvements – Dr. A.J. Chandler Park Renovation (CA2402.401)
The City of Chandler began construction in early 2026 for the Dr. A.J. Chandler Park Renovation project. Home to many of the city’s special events and festivals, the park was last renovated in 1986, and Downtown Chandler has changed significantly since that time. With the addition of multi-family housing, office space, and new retailers and restaurants, the park has also seen an increase in special events and entertainment, now with more than 100 events a year.
The City of Chandler has contracted with Willmeng for improvements to Dr. A.J. Chandler Park, on both sides of Arizona Avenue, between Buffalo and Boston streets.
West Side of Arizona Avenue:
- Crews have completed the pier columns on the west side of Arizona Avenue which will support the shade canopies, and this week are pouring foundation slabs for the restroom and the south canopy.
- Scheduled to begin June 19, masonry crews will install masonry walls for the restroom building and following that, for the south canopy. In late July, crews will erect the steel structure for the south canopy.
East Side of Arizona Avenue:
- Electric crews are currently working to trench and install electric conduit to serve the park on the east side of Arizona Avenue.
- Landscape crews have dug several tree holes on the east side and begun installing the special structural soil before any plantings can take place.
- Grading activities continue to prepare the area for concrete foundations and hardscape elements.
- Crews are also currently working to pour the concrete slab for the north canopy, and in mid to late July, masonry crews will begin installing the masonry walls for the canopy.
- In addition, the drill rig will mobilize soon to the east side of Arizona Avenue to begin drilling piers and setting rebar cages for the east shade canopy. Following that effort, crews will erect the structural steel columns.
During construction, parking along Arizona Avenue is limited and a few angled parking spaces along San Marcos and Arizona Place are not available; however, parking structures and surface street parking continue to offer parking throughout the downtown.
Park improvements on the west side of Arizona Avenue are expected to be complete prior to the 2026 holiday season, and on the east side of Arizona Avenue by early spring 2027.
