As we celebrate National Public Works Week (May 19-25), a small team of City of Chandler employees is preparing to begin a long, detailed and intensive process to prove their department worthy of recognition as one of the best in the nation.

The Chandler Public Works & Utilities Department is once again applying for agency re-accreditation from the American Public Works Association (APWA). Public Works & Utilities is comprised of the Water, Water Conservation, Water Quality, Wastewater, Transportation, Solid Waste Services and Capital Projects divisions. The Department first earned national accreditation from APWA in 2004, and re-accreditation every four years since then (2008, 2012, 2016).

The process for 2020 begins in earnest next month, as the Department’s Re-accreditation Task Group Leaders begin reviewing, revising, and preparing application data and evaluate more than 426 of the Public Works & Utilities Department’s management practices. The project culminates in June 2020 when APWA evaluators visit Chandler to review the materials and see how the Department operates on a daily basis.

Why does it matter to Chandler residents that Public Works & Utilities earns accreditation or re-accreditation?

According to APWA it is a great accomplishment that means residents, businesses and stakeholders can be confident that the City of Chandler Public Works & Utilities Department is well managed, professional, proactive and dedicated to providing services that are efficient, dependable and cost-effective.

This year, during National Public Works Week, remember that Chandler has a dedicated group of employees who strive for excellence and are always looking for ways to better serve Chandler residents and customers. The Chandler Public Works & Utilities Department thanks you for your support!
